@christopher_korling: if you need WX9100 eGPU, then the only AMD-approved option is Sonnet Breakaway Box 650.
AMD ProGraphics cards are only made by AMD, so they are available only one form factor. Enterprise 18.Q1 driver already supports XConnect for WX9100

Registered just to say that I would be very very interested in this! The big thing holding me back from the 1070 and 1080 Gaming Box was the fact that I've got a Freeysnc monitor.

@nombrescreeno I considered the puck, but I'm really looking for a single TB3 cable solution for my setup and there's no USB hub on the puck. I also like that the Gigabyte boxes can be upgraded in the future  (assuming that card you want comes in small enough ITX size).

You also can't get Sonnet devices in Australia, bringing them over yourself would cost a fair chunk of cash!

If Gigabyte only do a 580 version I'll go for it. The possibility of Official MacOS support with 10.3.4 is a huuuuge draw for me and I'll probably upgrade my laptop late this year/early next once Quad Core's are available in the 13" form factor (already so with Razer's 2018 Blade). I'll get 16GB at the same time then as well (hopefully DDR4L too!).

@nombrescreeno No word on release date yet. I would guess late March/early April.

I'm definitely interested in a SFF AMD egpu box. Just ordered the puck but I might return it now once it arrives.

These are now listed on Gigabyte's website!

No 'Official' support for MacOS just yet, but 10.3.4 isn't out yet either.

Are there any hardware or firmware differences between the Nvidia and AMD version of their Gaming Box?
Would an empty 1070 gaming box fitted with a 580-card be the same as this package?

Oh boy, that looks sweet!

Is there any chance that we get a group buy or forum/subreddit discount, or are we going to be doing MSRP (and do we know what that is yet?)

People have tried the RX 580 ITX in the 1070/1080 box and haven't been able to power it up - so something is different

Apparently the official announcement was today. And no news on price yet. But HDMI x 1 、DP x 3  and 100W PD officially. Lead us not into temptation. Let's hope the price is not too tempting 😛

MSRP is likely to be same as the GTX 1070 Gaming Box at $599.

So why exactly would this be better than the 1080 box for Mac users, given they work fine with the community scripts? What am I missing?

@dream3,  the difference for High Sierra is in installing and maintaining a natively supported AMD eGPUs vs Nvidia supported via third-partry scripts. Start here to fill in the missing pieces: https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/wip-nvidia-egpu-support-for-high-sierra/

@nando4

Thanks. But is anything preventing apple from enabling native nvidia support in, lets say 10.13.5 or 10.14?
Also, is the performance hit from the 1080 to the 580 be worth it just to skip the scripts?

With how Apple cut off non-TB3 implementations in the latest High Sierra betas... nothing is out of the realm of possibility with regards to them cutting off support for non-AMD cards

@nombrescreeno
What does cutting off non TB3 implementations mean in practice?

And I thought apple already didnt support nvidia, it was up to nvidia to release drivers and up to us to make it work. Do you think apple would look for measures to stop nvidia cards from working altogether?

This RX 580 Gaming Box is in the spotlight due to a recent exposure of Nvidia Partners Program. This program has terms that limit AIBs from using gaming-focused brands on competing companies with Nvidia. It explains why the GTX 1070/1080 Gaming Box has AORUS gaming brand and the RX 580 Gaming Box has Gigabyte brand. The bigger picture is that Nvidia is sending a big F-U to Intel and AMD. It's also indirectly saying Nvidia is not Apple's bitch. Competition is good for consumers. Anti-competitive tactics are bad for consumers.

Does it really matter what branding the box has? I mean besides marketing, if it is sold side by side with the aorus boxes and looks exactly the same?
I'd be just happy if the RX 580 box was available somewhere with a price that is not too bad

April 11th 2017 was the first beta release of Nvidia Pascal web drivers for macOS. It's been nearly a year and like @eightarmedpet said the driver performance is not acceptable in macOS. In contrast, there were only a few AMD cards that worked via kext edits this time last year. Apple now has supported nearly a dozen of Radeon cards.

So basically amd is working with apple and nvidia refuses to, correct?

Will 10.13.4 support TB3 egpus with older TB2 macs too?

More or less, but I wouldn't attribute this fully to malice or stubbornness from Nvidia's side.

AMD and Apple both have much stronger incentives to ensure full support of AMD GPUs, because they're used in all modern Macs. Apple needs their own products to be stable in their stock configuration so they sink in heavy engineering and QA time on their end, and AMD works to make it happen because they need Apple's business.

Nvidia's only current macOS users are people who either own Macs and buy eGPUs, build Hackintoshes, or upgrade older Mac Pro towers. All three of those use cases combined are a relatively tiny. It probably requires a nontrivial amount of engineering work to get right, and I can't really blame Nvidia for not prioritizing it.

Thank you bud, that makes total sense. Great explanation!

You guys think that for folks staying with 10.13.3 abd TB2, the Rx580 offer more than the 1070/1080?

@Locky28 you can purchase Sonnet gear in Australia through macfixit.com.au.  The Sonnet 350 is on sale there for a not totally unreasonable price right now.  It was a better deal earlier in the week (I made a post in the deals section about it).

I'd be interested in a group buy for the RX580 Gaming Box, I'd replace my Sonnet 350 + RX580 combo as the Gaming Box is significantly smaller!

@ankushg

I just realized something and it didnt make much sense to me. Hasnt intel been partering with nvidia forever? How come now the latest intel chips have integrated AMD stuff? Maybe Apple pushed a bit for that to happen?

I dont know, it all seems weird that nvidia is isolating themselves like this. Perhaps the future will be 99% intel CPUs and 99% AMD discrete GPUs.

Yo sign me up for any sort of group buy/MSRP sale!

I have the gaming box GTX 1080 right now and a '17 15' MBP. I heard the AMD Windows drivers have better loopback bandwidth, and going forward I anticipate less investment from Nvidia and the community into Nvidia card solutions, so I'll give them up for a seamless AMD solution.

Once my 580 is here, I'll sell my GTX 1080 for what I paid for it, $650 (+tax shipping) to anyone on this forum who wants it.
