Gigabyte was out in force at Pax East, showcasing its gaming chops with Aorus-branded desktops and laptops. However, the PCs weren’t the only tasty technological treat Gigabyte displayed: The company quietly revealed an Aorus external graphics dock with a GTX 1070 inside.

The new Aorus GTX 1070 Thunderbolt External Graphics Box runs over a single Thunderbolt 3 connection, and it’s a complete departure from the Gigabyte GPU dock we saw last year at CES. Gone is the tall, upright, handled, awkward chassis; it’s been replaced with a small, sleek, and impressively light case. The new External Graphics Box will also ship with a Gigabyte GTX 1070 mini GPU already inside, and the dock itself is only slightly larger than the graphics card.

Furthermore, the weak 250W power supply from the previous iteration has been replaced with a more powerful 450W PSU, which is plenty of juice for even the most top-end graphics cards (assuming they can fit inside the tiny dock). The new dock also features two USB 3.0 ports and RGB LED lighting.

Pricing and availability for the Aorus GTX 1070 External Graphics Box is unknown, as this new device hasn’t seen the light of day until now. However, judging by the fact that it was running a demo in complete working order, it may not be long until we see it hit the market.

Given 1070s seem to go for about $400 these days, $599 seems a pretty good price, $200 of the amount for the enclosure is pretty good going.

DEFINITELY keeping an eye out on this

A 1070 in that form factor without having to mod the case/cables has been what I've been looking for

This box: W3.77" x D8.26" x H6.38"

AKiTiO Thunder 2/3: W2.99" x D9.17" x H5.86"

I really like the smaller form factor!

Now my only wish is that future versions of this will feature 65+ W power delivery, in order to make this a truely single cable docking station solution.

Seems like it does have power delivery, awesome 🙂

On the description it apparently has quick charging and power delivery on that unit. So i'm not sure what you're saying that the "future versions" of this will feature power delivery, when it says that it'll be included.

Just received confirmation from Aorus ANZ team. It will be available end of june or early july in AUS/NZ for around $1000.

Compare to USA, it is bit expensive. But everything is expensive here thou.

Due to form factor, they will ship only mini 1070 with it.

They just told me it will be available July 7th in Newegg. I might actually grab one on launch day.

Looks like the release date has been pushed back to the 14th - thx for reaching out to them for an ETA!

The size of this, the 100W power delivery spec, and the fact that this has a USB hub might make this my favorite eGPU yet.  I wonder if there are going to be mini cards that you can upgrade down the line or if you will be stuck with a 1070?

I suspect any small-sized video card with similar power-requirements will work in this. The box seems to be openable via 2 screws on the back. The PSU is a 450W with an 8-pin connector according to the specs page. That should be good enough to power up pretty much anything that fits physically in the box (if you need more connectors, just use a splitter - The PSU itself should be up to it).

This looks like my new favorite thing.

There is a preorder possibility (599 USD with free shipping) but only for US and Canada locations...

all you need to do is pm Brian Ngo, who is in charge of the Aorus Community Network on fb:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/AORUS/

I talked with him about a similar preorder for EU locations - he told me he would contact the Gigabyte EU branch and return to me as soon as he knows something

From what I heard, this box can't plug & play with MacBook 2016/2017. They said it was made for PCs, but they will wait until High Sierra come out, they will make a test, maybe we will have firmware upgrade for macbook at the end of this year.

For VNs: It also available on 14th

As far as I understand, at least at the moment Apple is only supporting AMD cards officially. AMD drivers are being backed into the MacOS itself, and eGPU functionality is validated and supported by Apple and AMD. Which means NV eGPU may or may not work properly - hard to say...

The Thunderbolt 3 board in this Gigabyte Gaming Box enclosure should work with macOS. The bigger question is what has Nvidia been doing to catch up. I remember Nvidia would release new web drivers within 24 hours of a macOS build. It’s been more than a month and several 10.12.6 Beta builds and we have not seen anything.

It means two things. Either Nvidia management said “Fuck It!” following Apple’s announcement of eGPU support using an AMD GPU…or Nvidia engineers are all hands on deck working on 10.13 rather than 10.12.6.

This is exciting and consumers stand to benefit. My guess is the Apple official eGPU box is not a box at all. It’s in the form of the next Thunderbolt Display, custom board and non-upgradable.

Thank you for sharing this video. The HQ vs U CPU comparison will of course favour the HQ CPU. It also masks at least three underlying performance issues with TB3 itself which we’ve uncovered:  https://egpu.io/thunderbolt-3-news-for-egpus/#tb3-perf . The TB3 eGPU has specific requirements to ensure it’s performing at it’s highest potential.

Ordered one to try and use with my yoga 720 4k. At that price it's an absolute steal considering 1070 prices are still inflated from cryptominers.

Ditto; I'm about ready to buy one and find out, but hearing from someone else first would be awesome since I am traveling and can't really test it.

My general assumption is that it shouldn't be that different than any other eGPU, but yeah, confirmation would be nice

I've been following egpus on and off for the past 2 years and this is the first one to really catch my eye as a reasonably priced plug and play solution. I'd really like to buy it now, but I won't be buying a new ultrabook for a few months so I'm curious if I could get it to work with my TB2 13'' Macbook Pro 2015 while I wait. If anyone ends up testing out a similar config, please post your experience!

It is very different in Bootcamp due to only the dGPU being available and the iGPU being disabled by default. You'll only be able to play on an external monitor, which is preferable anyways, but to game on the internal screen, you'll need to activate the iGPU as well and see that the system still has enough resources to allocate for the eGPU.
