Hello!
In my previous post about the Sapphire Gearbox I was trying to pin point the bandwith problem with the box. So now after good amount of time, they finally released the needed firmware update for the bandwith problem.

You can download the firmware update here: SapphireTech Website

Be aware that there is a problem with the website, so you have to disable your adblock to access the firmware download. Just select Windows 10 in the dropdown menu and you will see the firmware option pop up.

Just wanted to get this information out there. Maybe it helps someone.

Greetings!

@captchadoesntwork Thank you for sharing this news! With this new firmware, have you noticed the PSU turning off during system sleep? I recall it was running all the time when I tested the Sapphire Gearbox.

@itsage My pleasure. Can you tell me exactly what you mean by running? If the box is turned off (no light in the front) its not running if you are talking about the fans. There are also some newer models with different PSUs which feature the standard I/0 switch on the back.

What happens when the Mac or PC is put to sleep, but the Sapphire Gearbox unit is not turned off manually? Is the fan of the eGPU PSU running, or is it turned off automatically during system sleep? Do you have to manually turn off the eGPU unit after putting your PC/Mac to sleep to make the eGPU completely silent, or not?

I think if the unit is turned on, the fans wont stop spinning.

I will test this when I get into the office.

I tested your described situation and No, the box is not turning of when you put your pc/mac to sleep. You have to turn it off manually but when you turn it off manually, it will be completely off and wont make any noise.

I will talk to the technician team for the gearbox, maybe a turn off feature could be implemented or not. Thanks for the heads up!

Great information, but only it can be done on Windows. I wish if they had made it for macOS also would be cool but they didn't. Considering Apple supporting their GearBox and Sapphire GPU for eGPU. Now I don't know if the normal BootCamp installed Windows 10 will be able to update the firmware or I have to do it after booting from rEFInd or automate-eGPU EFI?

Planning on getting Vega 56 but Sapphire don't list it in their compatible list. Maybe RX580 / Rx590

Hi all. I am trying to update the firmware on the Sapphire Gearbox but I get an error saying that thunderbolt service does not  exist. That happens on an intel NUC and in bootcamp on a 2018 Mac Mini. I installed the newest driver that I could find, also no go. Any ideas will be much appreciated. Thank you!

The FWUpdateTool needs Intel Thunderbolt Software. You can download version [17.4.77.400] from Gigabyte support website.

Thanks, I will try with that version. I want to mention that the enclosure works fine, thunderbolt driver are installed, but for whatever reason I cannot update the firmware on Gearbox.

Hi @captchadoesntwork - has your Sapphire Gearbox been stable since you updated the firmware? (Thanks for that update, btw!) Since the firmware update seems to solve the H2D speed problem highlighted by @itsage ( https://egpu.io/sapphire-gearbox-review-loud-clunky), I'm thinking of getting one and pairing it with a RX 5700 reference card from Sapphire - I haven't been able to find any longer-term reviews of Gearbox performance though, so any feedback from you would be much appreciated.

@leela Keep in mind the Sapphire GearBox can barely fit a reference cooler AMD graphics card. My recommendation would be the Mantiz Venus for better features and similar budget (in the US). It can fit much larger cards.

@itsage thanks for the info! Do you think the cooling could be inadequate due to the close fit?

Didn’t consider the Mantiz Venus yet because it doesn’t seem to be available in Europe - currently the Sapphire Gearbox / Razer Core X / Sonnet Breakaway Box are the most affordable ones here.

Was also trying to keep my setup as physically small as possible; but I suppose most enclosures that fit full-size cards are similar enough in size that it makes no discernible difference.

If those are your options, the Sapphire Gearbox makes sense. Cooling should be adequate. The PSU 40mm cooling fan is the loudest component in my observation. You can look into replacing it with a quieter fan [Gaming Box 40mm cooling fan mods].

I have been using Sapphire Gearbox with Vega56 for some time. The box I bought in EU and it contains Xigmatek GD1U-500W power supply (without I/O switch). According my opinion the box it self is quiet enough, comparable to Akitio Thunder2 with Noctua fan. The Sapphire Vega56 is very loud under full load. While gaming I'm using V-Synch to keep it on 60FPS. Vega is loaded for half power and works quiet. Also I have updated Firmware to 41.41 via Bootcamp without any issue. I believe that the Spphire 5700XT will fit inside because according data sheet from sapphiretech.com it is shorter than Vega56 and TDP is only 15W higher.
