H2D Bandwith Firmware Update for Sapphire GearBox is available now!
Thanks, I will try with that version. I want to mention that the enclosure works fine, thunderbolt driver are installed, but for whatever reason I cannot update the firmware on Gearbox.
Hi @captchadoesntwork - has your Sapphire Gearbox been stable since you updated the firmware? (Thanks for that update, btw!) Since the firmware update seems to solve the H2D speed problem highlighted by @itsage ( https://egpu.io/sapphire-gearbox-review-loud-clunky), I'm thinking of getting one and pairing it with a RX 5700 reference card from Sapphire - I haven't been able to find any longer-term reviews of Gearbox performance though, so any feedback from you would be much appreciated.
@leela Keep in mind the Sapphire GearBox can barely fit a reference cooler AMD graphics card. My recommendation would be the Mantiz Venus for better features and similar budget (in the US). It can fit much larger cards.
@itsage thanks for the info! Do you think the cooling could be inadequate due to the close fit?
Was also trying to keep my setup as physically small as possible; but I suppose most enclosures that fit full-size cards are similar enough in size that it makes no discernible difference.
If those are your options, the Sapphire Gearbox makes sense. Cooling should be adequate. The PSU 40mm cooling fan is the loudest component in my observation. You can look into replacing it with a quieter fan [Gaming Box 40mm cooling fan mods].
I have been using Sapphire Gearbox with Vega56 for some time. The box I bought in EU and it contains Xigmatek GD1U-500W power supply (without I/O switch). According my opinion the box it self is quiet enough, comparable to Akitio Thunder2 with Noctua fan. The Sapphire Vega56 is very loud under full load. While gaming I'm using V-Synch to keep it on 60FPS. Vega is loaded for half power and works quiet. Also I have updated Firmware to 41.41 via Bootcamp without any issue. I believe that the Spphire 5700XT will fit inside because according data sheet from sapphiretech.com it is shorter than Vega56 and TDP is only 15W higher.
There is a new firmware version from 6/5/2019 on their website: https://www.sapphiretech.com/en/consumer/gearbox-thunderbolt-3-egfx-solution (download tab -> choose Windows as OS).
There were a prompt at the beginning, that the SDK is missing. Installng this legacy driver removed the message: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28658/Thunderbolt-3-Legacy-Driver-for-Windows-10-for-Intel-NUC?wapkw=thunderbolt
But now i have the following error:
(Thunderbolt software is not installed)
How can I fix that to start the Firmware update tool?
