Is it OK to tilt/rotate eGPU enclosures (for better cooling)?

Hi,

I've pretty much decided to get either a Razer Core X, or a Sonnet Breakaway. Either with an AMD 580, or a Vega56 (or maybe one of the new cards to be released this month). For space / noise reasons, I'd like to place the eGPU underneath my desk. My desk legs are similar to these, but with the horizontal crossbars about 10-15cm further away from the floor:

I thought about attaching a wooden platform to those crossbars between the desk legs, cutting a large hole into it (to match the eGPU's air intake) and then placing the eGPU on top. So that the fans take in the air from the bottom, and output the air to the top. Only downside would be that I'd have to use a longer TB cable – probably 1m long. (Which apparently has an impact on performance?)

Another option would be to stand the eGPU enclosure vertically onto a stool (front side pointing towards the floor, cables pointing towards the desk). The enclosure's backside would be about 20-30cm away from the desk, which would mean I could use the 0.5m TB cable.

The only potential downside I can see is that maybe there'll be more dust entering the enclosure (I have carpet in my office).

What do you guys think?

Tilt/Rotate should be fine. The GPU and other internals should be sufficiently supported for any orientation as long as there's no sudden acceleration (like a fall from a stool). Air intakes should not be blocked though.

Longer Thunderbolt cables are fine as long as they are active Thunderbolt cables supporting 40 Gbps.

Dust will happen in any orientation but the orientation will decide what surfaces the dust will settle on. Just clean it once a year.

Thanks. Glad to hear that – and good to know that longer TB cables are fine.

The new Lenovo dock looks a far better option than the Core X or the Sonnet (I had a Sonnet).

2017 13" MacBook Pro Touch Bar
GTX1060 + AKiTiO Thunder3 + Win10
GTX1070 + Sonnet Breakaway Box + Win10
GTX1070 + Razer Core V1 + Win10
Vega 56 + Razer Core V1 + macOS + Win10
Vega 56 + Mantiz Venus + macOS + W10

Do you have a link for that?

Found it – (I searched for "Lenovo dock", which obviously showed plenty of docks, but not the new eGPU one)

Looking good, but won't be available until May unfortunately...
