Looking for Advice after purchasing Vega 64 & Mantiz Venus on macOS 10.13.2

Hey guys, first time poster here.

I recently decided to jump into the eGPU experience by purchasing a Vega 64 & Mantiz Venus

Reviews like the 9to5 & comments like these 1, 2 convinced me that the Mantiz could handle it. Well it turns out I should have done more research like looking here. As it turns out every 20 minutes or so the egpu will cut out and go dark (I'm assuming because of the power supply issues). So now I'm looking for the solution. As far as I see it there are a couple of options that I will list in order of my preference.

1) Upgrade the power supply in the Mantiz Venus.
A thread here was seemingly undecided over this idea's merits.
A comment suggested it was simple and recommended the Lian-Li PE750.
My question: Is this a sensible approach & if so would you recommend a different power supply?

2) Purchase a new eGPU enclosure. The problem here is that I haven't been able to locate one with a power supply that meets the 750W recommendation and I quite like the design of the mantiz.

3) Return my Vega 64 and swap it out with a Vega 56. My understanding here is that the power draw on the 56 is much more reasonable and I'll be far less likely to run into power draw issues.

So if anyone has any advice or recommendations I'm all ears. Thanks in advance for your help.

I would stick with Vega 56 if you don’t want to change PSU

I'm up for changing the PSU (As I'd prefer to have the higher performance 64 rather than the lower 56; assuming I can get it running stable). I just have no idea which one to get.

Another option for you is to use a second psu to feed one of the 8pin. 

Thats what I did with my Vega FE

This will show my ignorance but I’m not exactly sure how to do that. A quick google returns several articles about the supposed benefits of that but not how to.

Also read/found this article https://techreport.com/review/32391/amd-radeon-rx-vega-64-and-rx-vega-56-graphics-cards-reviewed/11  which indicates that the power save mode could reduce the power load by ~40 watts which might work. Google results indicate that these modes are controlled via a physical switch located on the card? 

Im going to be traveling till Tuesday but I’ll report back then if I get any positive results. Thanks for the suggestions thus far!

So where are guys claiming that 550W is more than enough for Vega64? "Oh, I tested for many hours". Of course these guys know better than AMD which created both GPU and the XConnect tech.

At least Mantiz follows AMD recommendations and list only Vega 56 https://mymantiz.com/pages/faq

Unfortunately there is no Radeon Settings in MacOS, so users cannot adjust clocks/voltages/etc. 🙁

I haven't tested the Mantiz box as I've done with the OMEN/Razer core v2 hence why I haven't said anything about it working or why it should work, etc.  Nice trolling though.

As I mentioned in the other thread, each PSU is different - obviously the FSP 550w PSU isn't good enough quality to handle ~300-350w on the 12 volt rail (cross load/transient response time).  If you read a few reviews on it, you would quickly learn that it is a budget PSU and is likely used for its low cost while supporting the majority of GPUs on the market.

I think it is fair to say that AMD is taking a conservative approach since they understand each PSU is different and what eGPUs do is difficult for low quality power supplies.

FSP 550W had lots of types, but ours had been modified to fit:

12V in 375W and 3.3/5V can be zero.

John - thank you for the info

How was it modified to fit?  Could you provide additional information?  Tom's hardware has a good review on the unit and notes that the ACRF topology is a bit dated an results in poor-performing +12V rail in transient loads.  Is this why it is sort of capped at 375w instead of the PSU's full 550w?

Well since I can't adjust the settings in macOS it looks like my options are limited to a new PSU or replacing the 64 with 56. Any suggestions here? (I don't know why I would listen to reddit again but the only PSU recommended there appears to be discontinued).

Note: Capping my fps at 30 instead of 60 keeps the Vega 64 processor well under 50% (according to istat menus) which has reduced the frequency of the crashes (one every 20-30 minutes to one every 3-4 hours).

Sorry guys, I was out for a while and I am lost. Why the Vega 64 is not supported by Mantiz if the TDP of the card is less than 375W which Mantiz offers... Maybe I didn't get something here...

From what I gather, some Vega 64 cards can spike their power draw well above 375w which can cause the box to power down. Having said that - I currently use a reference Powercolor Vega 64 with a Mantiz Venus - and I have not had any issues at all (other than the card is very noisy). Now, per a suggestion from Sky11, I did go into Wattman on the Win10 side and change P6 to the maximum state, and I don't know if that may have helped.
