I transformed mine into a very useful  & compact docking station with a 8TB RAID 1 with a raid controller, 2 8TB NAS drives and a compact HDD mount:

mount
raid
IMG 20170623 221931
IMG 20170623 222316

I got the mount from here and the controller from here. Setting it up was quite easy: I made four holes on the mount that matched the holes on the cover, and I had to cut two of the four mounting "lips" (bend them instead). I also made four holes to mount the bare raid controller with typical motherboard mounts on the side of the hdd aluminum structure. Even though the hard drives are mounted with anti-vibration rubber mounts, there is still some residual vibration on the case, but nothing to worry about. The raid controller supports hardware raid0/1 & software raids and is connected with a esata to sata cable to the mainboard. I was also lucky that the hight was just right so the USB 3 cables could pass in between the two drives.

great idea and work! I would do something similar but with 4x6tb drives in SW raid 10 from W10. I think I'll put 2 inside and 2 outside somewhere maybe on bottom. Heavy mod I think...

Anyway could the stock ali power those extra 4 hd (other than gpu + charge)?

I'll need a larger sata III port multiplier, like this one:

http://www.ebay.ie/itm/StarTech-com-Port-Multiplier-Controller-Card-5-Port-SATA-to-Single-SATA-III-/111598113652?hash=item19fbc41374:g:QlIAAOSwFMZWqCSq

Any other better multiplier? Maybe something like your esata-sata connection? Is that esata the same bandwidth of direct sata 6 gbps?

eSata and sata share the same protocol and speed. That being said, you have to check whether the sata->usb3 controller of the Venus supports port multiplication. If not you will have to get the 5port version of the controller that I used that supports raid 10:

https://www.amazon.com/Oodelay-eSATA-Port-Multiplier-Controller/dp/B00PZ7347E/ref=pd_sbs_147_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=HB3MXD71M5VVD3DMNA6S

You might be able to put them vertically in which case you could fit all 4 of them in the case and have just the fan mounted from the bottom. Make sure you put a strong fan, or even increase the diameter of the hole to support a 120mmx15mm fan, cause its going to get crowded and hot!

Just wondering if an all in one water cooled 1080 ti's fan and radiator would fit where the Venus's fan is now?

+1 Would be great to know if this box is even an option for my EVGA 1080 ti Hybrid

There’s room to stuff the water cooling lines and radiator inside the Mantiz Venus. The challenge is to find a nice spot to route exhaust air out of the enclosure. The existing bottom fan location is for an 80mm fan. You can expand this mounting location to accommodate the 120mm size fan and radiator in most hybrid cards.

They say the port multiplier is transparent to the sata connector: the mb doesn't even know there are more units. The only difference I see is the lack of HW raid, but I will use SW one.

Great idea to put vertically. Have you some adapter suggestion link  to mount them?

I tbink I'll adapt a  noctua 120mm on the bottom.

Which is the inside height?

Hd vertically are 147mm: is there room for sata connectors and 15mm  fan? Otherwise I should make some holes on the bottom aperture space...

To the sata connector yes, but the Venus sata channel is running through a USB3 line so double check that it will work.

You can use two of the brackets that I used but you will have to find out a way to mount them. With just one I used the holes that were already available on the side cover but for two I think you will need to drill some extra holes.

Also I don't think you will have enough space for vertical drives and a 15mm fan. Maybe if you find compact enough drive connectors.

I am wondering what style of cooler people are choosing for the GPU's in their systems, reference blower style or more traditional fan styles? Mymantiz_John do you have a recommendation on one style vs the other?

In my experience, the traditional fan styles work well with the blowout stock fan, whereas a reference blower style works better if the stock fan is reversed as an intake fan.

Keep in mind that many GPUs with traditional fan styles have silent mode which disables the fans. While it gives nice low noise levels the temperature of the board can go quite high so I would use heatsinks as shown here.

The 120mm diameter of the fan and the radiator in most hybrid cards will not have enough height clearance so the fan will have to be mounted from the outside of the floor. The other solution is to drill many little holes on the side cover that the SSD mount sits. Quite a bit of drilling there but it if done carefully it would look very nice 🙂

I don't understand which is the difference with your multiplier card: isn't esata all similar to the normal sata connector? So even your esata cable to the sata mb, then has to cope with the Usb3 line of the expansion card...

I thought of another way to put them vertically: vertical on the short side so the height of the 4 hd will be 101mm and the fan at the bottom is ok. The only prob, I don't know if the 2.54x4 + about  2cm of total spacing (but I'm guessing, I don't know how much space there is between hd)= about 122mm fits in the width of Mantiz before  the gpu card. it is quite 2cm more than your fitting... This way sata connector would not be a problem.

I need to know:

1) exact mm  dimensions of inside of Venus

2) how much space width between the rear of the gpu and the side of the Venus

3) is the stock ali capable to power gpu + 4 hd (about -EDIT- 40W ) + charge ( maybe at reduced current?)

TIA

I can't speak for anyone else, but I put an EVGA GTX 1080 Gaming blower-style card in mine. It seemed like a logical choice given the limited ventilation in the Venus.

However, it seems that the stock cooling arrangement is designed for an open-air cooler. The card's fans will draw air into the case through the vented side and up over the board. Then the case fan will draw the hot air out and exhaust it out the bottom.

I've almost entirely reversed the airflow. I replaced the stock fan with a Noctua NF-R8 Redux, blowing into the case. I was worried about the ICs getting too hot so I also added heatsinks and a small 40mm fan exhausting out the side.

Right now the blower just draws air from inside the case, and I'm worried about it starving the other components at high speed. I'm planning to remove the plastic from the side and a fit a new piece with a bypass duct for the blower, but I haven't got to that yet.

1. it is hard to tell, even I use CAD to measure it, there are also PSU, Cable, Daughter boards...etc, the inside Dimm will be for?

2. Please make a simple drawing to me, then I'll measure it with CAD. I am not sure what area & measurement point you want to know.

3. how are you going to power up 4x Hd under the current PSU cable layout? tell me more about your idea, then I will know there's any current reduction or not.

Relooking at the pics of the 2 hd, it seems it's not possible to put 4 on the short vertical side (case B)... For a moment I thought he put the 2 hd horizontally...

So the 3rd case C:

@Mymantiz_John,

I received my Mantiz Venus a week ago. It can successfully power both of my computers (Dell XPS 9350 and MacBook Pro 13) but I can't get anything else to work - USB, ethernet, video card or internal SSD. Also the fan doesn't turn on.

I'm not certain if it's something I did or if the unit  is defective. Can it be exchanged? Can it be repaired? Can replacement boards be ordered? What options are available?

Thanks in advance for your response. I can provide an order number if needed.

Hey everyone, I got my Mantis Venus in today and got the automate eGPU working. I have the Web drivers installed and have my GTX1080Ti recognized by my computer. Hooked up external monitor and it works fine.

However, my MacBook pro screen keeps flickering on and off without end. Second I attempted to run the Unigen Heaven Benchmark and it wasn't registering my GTX1080Ti.

I am running a

2016 MacBook Pro 15" (Touchbar) AMD 455

Manits Venus

EVGA GTX 1080Ti Founders Edition

LG 26" Monitor

Help would be greatly appreciated.

I paired mine with a 1080 Ti, Zotac Amp edition. (Traditional 2 fan cooling)

I did remove the plastic from the side so more air can flow in. And my next step is to replace the stock fan with a Noctua 80mm. Hopefully the sound and temps are acceptable, otherwise I'll have to look at other possible modifications.

The fan fits entirely behind the graphics card, so clearance shouldn't be an issue. I suppose if a card had a very thick backplate it might collide, but if you have a thin backplate, no backplate or a short card it'll clear easily.

It is taller so I've secured the bady in another more silent way with silicon "screws".

Guys.. I must say that Mantiz has an amazing customer service. 100% customer oriented.

After having a bad surprice with my Venus unit, Mantiz support tackled the problem offering different solutions.

At this moment the Venus I received is in it way back to Mantiz and I’m waiting to receive a new one in a perfect shape in the following days.

Thanks again John.. 10/10!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Perfect, thank you: now I'll try to elaborate the sketch with the 4xHD and I'll tell you what will came out.

For the power, it seems too little, but maybe it can work:

these are the specs from datasheet:

Startup current (A, max.): (1.2A, max +5V, 2A @ +12V)

Idle (W, avg.) : 7,3W

At normal use a max of 9W, so x4=36W, that's ok with 5A.

The problem is at startup: 4x HD at startup will use [email protected] (and [email protected] max and this is ok under 5A). BUT this is only for a very short period of time to spin the motors, a peak, let's say 2sec?

Should the ali support these 8A on 12V for only 2-3sec (and probably lot less time)?

Anyone gotten their Mantiz to work with High Sierra latest Beta and what card did you use? Im getting nowhere with the Asus RX580 STRIX 8GB. I can still return the card but am stuck on what to buy. I've seen some Sapphire cards mentioned in this thread but they are impossible to find (was really lucky to get the ASUS one.)

Some input from people who got it to work would be great!

(PS : @Mymantiz_John: I know it doesn't officially support MacOS but a guy can dream right? )

I made some positioning with the 4 HD on your schema.

I have 2 solutions, all with vertical HD:

1) 3 HD + 1 HD

The 3xHD go very close to the rear of the GPU (I don't know if the rear will heat, I don't think a lot.)
The space between the 3 HD is close, about 6mm.
The connectors should be ok also with the stock fan because they are on one side, so they can go upto the bottom of the case.
If I want to put a fan of 92mm or 120mm it must be put outside the case on the bottom space.
I draw the 3 HD in light red, the 4° in yellow, the fan in light blue.

2) 2 HD + 2 HD

The 2xHD have more space towards the GPU (It can be mounted also horizontally like  kotlos  did).
The space between the 3 HD is more, about 8mm, but it can be more.
The connectors are ok with the stock 80mm fan and I think also with a 92mm fan also inside the case.
Instead if I want to put a 120mm fan it must be put outside the case on the bottom space.
I draw the 2 HD in light red, the 3-4° in yellow, the 120mm fan in light blue, the 92mm in light green.
The drawback of this one is the length of GPU is reduced at 274mm but it's fine with lot of them.

The port multiplier could be put over the stock ali, I suppose.

I don't find correct brackets, maybe I should build one myself drilling a piece of iron.

Or at least with the  2+2HD I could buy the kotlos enclosure (I don't know if it will fit ok for the 3-4° HD)

I link also a psd file, so if you want to move something you can build another version 🙂

https://www.sendspace.com/file/o24pus

What do you think?

I got it working. I plugged my Mantis into MacOS and it found an unrecognizable drive then asked if I wanted to Initialize and format. I formatted to (Fat32) returned to my Windows partition and worked there too.

(PS : @Mymantiz_John: I know it doesn't officially support MacOS but a guy can dream right? )

If it is a brand-new drive, it is likely not formatted yet, so just empty non-readable space without a drive letter assigned to it. You can do as the guy above me says, or in Windows, go to your disk manager, and you should see your disk there in grey. Right click on it, format it to whatever file system suits your needs and assign it a drive letter.
