John, any estimate of Mantiz being available on Amazon? Will it have a cheaper shipping price when its there?

we havenot had a fix schedule yet. Because we dont have enough inventory to spread to Amazon. 2nd, for customer point of view. it will not be a free charge of shipping in Amazon( I guess ) + State tax. IMO, there's no huge difference.

@itsage, have you had the opportunity to try with the latest firmware into the Venus?? Cheers

new FW is on the way, we will publish it soon.

Will it be possible to do it from macos?

Mantiz Venus is a great product. I've just completed my setup with MBP 2017 & 980Ti on Win10. It was completely plug & play, no hacks were needed.

I will harshly criticize the overly loud fan in it though. It is simply impossible to stay in the room with such an annoying fan sound for too long. If it weren't easy to replace the fan that would've been a deal breaker. I've just plugged it off for now and am looking for a silent fan replacement.

I swapped out the fan for Noctua 80mm, much better on the ears now!

Other than the sound, I think this is a fantastic eGPU.

you can also try the first Fan connector with the stock system fan, it is lower RPM control.

Does the Latitude have a U-series processor? It could be suffering from the OPI GT2 issue.

Enclosure ports can decrease TB3 eGPU bandwidth by up to 31.2%

It’s pretty obvious why the Mantiz Venus has subpar measured CUDA-Z H2D bandwidth. It’s current firmware is statically reserving 10Gbps for the USB-C controller hosting it’s extra SATA/LAN/USB 3.0 ports.

Let’s compare it against an AKiTiO Node which has no additional ports and so has no active TB3  USB-C 3.1 controller.

enclosure Electrical
link
Reserved USB-C
bandwidth
available for
eGPU
TB3 cable “data”
bandwidth
Measured CUDA-Z
H2D
eGPU bandwidth
AKiTiO Node 32Gbps none / 0% 32Gbps / 100% 22Gbps 2254MiB/s   src
Mantiz Venus 32Gbps 10Gbps / 31.2% 22Gbps / 68.8% 22Gbps 1550MiB/s   src

We see that 68.8% of our 100% CUDA-Z measured bandwidth of 2254 is 1550, an exact match!  So those extra enclosure ports can impinge up to 31.2% of the total TB3 link’s bandwidth.

While I understand the Mantiz Venus firmware is scheduled for a new Intel revised firmware to improve the H2D figure (dynamic USB-C bandwidth allocation?), the fact remains that when those enclosure ports are in use, it will decrease eGPU bandwidth. At worst case by up to 31.2%!!

I’d like to offer price, performance and noise emission reasons then as to why the Sonnet Breakaway Box 550 (with no additional ports) is the current best TB3 enclosure for a 13″ or 15″ Macbook Pro at:

INFO: Sonnet Breakaway Box 550 is the best TB3 enclosure for a Macbook Pro

Q: What is the real-world eGPU bandwidth in Gbps with this 31.2% deducted?

If utilizing the current Mantiz firmware that statically allocates 10Gbps for the USB-C port controller, then the CUDA-Z H2D transfers will be, using the reference table of H2D transfers as a 100% reference is as below. 16Gbps-TB3 referring to hosts with a 2-lane TB3 controller like the Dell XPS series.

32Gbps-TB3 = 2254MiB/ss – 31.2% = 1550 = 13.00Gbps H2D (eGPU)
16Gbps-TB3 = 1451MiB/s – 31.2% = 998 =  8.37Gbps H2D (eGPU)

Q: What is the maximum throughput for any USB/SATA drives attached to a TB3 enclosure port?

If the enclosure is using a USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gbps) hub:

10Gbps or 1250MB/s

If the enclosure is using a USB 3.1 Gen1 (5Gbps) hub [ as in Mantiz Venus]

5Gbps or 625MB/s

Q: If I want the best eGPU performance, how should I host additional external devices?

Anybody, especially 15″ MBP owners wanting to maximize performance of external high performance storage AND eGPU devices is recommended to host their storage and eGPU from separate notebook ports to avoid this bandwidth competition.  That means your storage would be either:

– a separate 22Gbps TB3 enclosure hosting your PCIe storage
– a separate 10Gbps USB-C enclosure
– a separate 5Gbps USB enclosure

Example USB-C 2.5″ drive enclosure components

U$20 USB-C 2.5″ drive enclosure – note comes with a short 14cm USB-C cable
US$4 USB-C male-male extension cable 100cm or 200cm  – long cable if want enclosure near the TB3 enclosure

Any of the above will ensure 100% of the TB3 enclosure bandwidth is available for the eGPU. Just be sure to check for DMI bottlenecking if using anything other than a 15″ MBP as anything more than a 10Gbps USB-C enclosure is a waste there. See here to understand Intel chipset architectural limitations.

Incorrect presales info provided by the vendor

It’s worth pointing out that on March-23 Mymantiz_John advised here , when pressed on this point, that the ports wouldn’t impinge on eGPU bandwidth.

Posted by: Mymantiz_John

Hi All:

Let me clarify, there’s no performance lost in GPU unless the FW set it to be lower than the 32GB. Those extra ports including USB & Lan are nothing related with the PCI-e lane. it is a 40GB bandwidth and PCI-e x 4 occupied 32GB. that’s it.

eGPU Setup 1.35    •    eGPU Port Bandwidth Reference Table

So, now, the real bandwidth in a Mantiz with TB3 4x is 15Gbps (22-31.2%)?

In a TB3 x2, that is 16Gbps, is it 6Gbps ?!

So, now, the real bandwidth in a Mantiz with TB3 4x is 15Gbps (22-31.2%)?

In a TB3 x2, that is 16Gbps, is it 6Gbps ?!

If utilizing the current Mantiz firmware that statically allocates 10Gbps for the USB-C port controller, then the CUDA-Z H2D transfers will be, using the reference table of H2D transfers as a 100% reference:

32Gbps-TB3 = 2254MiB/ss – 31.2% = 1550 = 13.00Gbps H2D (eGPU)
16Gbps-TB3 = 1451MiB/s – 31.2% = 998 =  8.37Gbps H2D (eGPU)

Furthermore, consider that 31.2% is going to limit your Venus SATA/USB 3.0 attached storage to max out at:

32Gbps-TB3 = 2254MiB/s, of which 31.2% = 737MB/s (external SATA, USB 3.0 SSD)
16Gbps-TB3 = 1451MiB/s, of which 31.2% = 475MB/s (external SATA, USB 3.0 SSD)

We can se then that combining the eGPU & storage together in a TB3 enclosure benefits neither if wanting the best performance for each. This is due to competition for the limited TB3 “data” bandwidth sent across the cable.

I don't get well the MiB/s to Gbps...

Yes, your data are bad comparing with a USB 3.1 10Gbps connection.

Anyway the Sata/Usb3.0 transfers instead are not that bad: Sata 6Gbps is the max theoretically (you don't get real total bandwidth), so 737MB/s is a lot over the real band. You can think at normal MB SataIII with a SSD: you will not get anything more than about 500MB/s.

More, the USB3.0 devices are 5Gbps (theoretically, but real a lot less than Sata, with also more CPU occupation), so even with that you can't get more.

The only possible way to get more than 500MB should be having more than one Sata connector in the internal MB and make Raid0, but this is not the case on Mantiz, so the max speed from Mantiz can't be more than 500MB, due to Sata port bottleneck, not USB3.1 10Gbps limit and that's not that far from 475MB/s on 16Gbps.

Maybe you could get better results making a Raid0 out of 2 or 3x USB3.0 enclosures connected, but not that efficient for CPU.

My use of that connection could be, as I stated earlier with huge storage Raid, so more capacity than speed. But anyway I'm considering building the possibility to connect directly with eSata-Sata pc, bypassing the TB3 connection, so I'm freeying the bandwidth for the GPU and still get full bandwidth of Sata III.

Another option I will study after this first test, will be to make Sata Raid with a USB3.1 type-C connection out of Venus to get even more separate bandwidth (6 vs 10Gbps) from Venus, at that point a simple case for HD, not for data transfer.

Still very useful using only one external box instead of 2. But at this point, even other eGPU boxes come into count if they have the internal Mantiz space...

What bandwidth allocation does the enclosure USB-C 3.1 controller get with the new firmware? USB-C 3.1 is rated up to 10Gbps. Does this new firmware give any priority to the USB-C 3.1 attached devices to draw up to 10Gbps of the 32Gbps (31.2%) bandwidth on-demand (dynamically)?

1450 MiB/s x 8 =11600, how do you get 12.17 Gbit/s ? Which is the math under that?

An upcoming FW is going to be H2D 2254MiB/S for sure!

The design is USB 3.0 Gen I, not GEN II 10GB.

@Mymantiz_John

I'm having degraded host to device performance as well (mantiz is connected to dell latitude 7480; all dell's drivers are up to date):

CUDA-Z Report

=============

...

Memory Copy

Host Pinned to Device: 1303.71 MiB/s

Host Pageable to Device: 1158.23 MiB/s

Device to Host Pinned: 2541.79 MiB/s

Device to Host Pageable: 2092.33 MiB/s

Device to Device: 102.408 GiB/s

...

Does the Latitude have a U-series processor? It could be suffering from the OPI GT2 issue.

yes - cpu is core i7-7600u

not sure if OPI GT2 issue is the case.

btw according to this  dell latitude 7480 got 4 lanes pci-e behind thunderbolt 3 port.
