How does one update the firmware? I've downloaded the software from your blog, but I get an error.

"Error: 0x208 SDK_SERVICE_NOT_FOUND Thunderbolt service doesn't exist".

I'm assuming I'm supposed to install other software first?

@franketto: I don't see how this could solve my problem. Both VLC and MPC-HC should be able to utilize the hardware acceleration of my nVidia card. And with my old setup (same monitor, MSI GS30 + GTX 960 in its docking station) everything was working marvelously. I'm pretty certain at this point that the issue is either related to TB3 or to the fact that I have another nVidia GPU in my laptop (which is deactivated in device manager). So if anyone could give it a try with VLC and succeed without it crashing (with hardware acceleration enabled), I'd know that it's not a general problem related to the TB3/Venus system. 🙂

Anyway next week I will have my Mantiz and I will test too, for sure (with a GTX970).

with Mac Bootcamp?

1. Power off the eGPU, disconnect the Laptop. Unplug your graphic card ( Be careful not letting PCIe metal bracket damage the board, hold it well ! )

2. Turn on your eGPU & connect with your laptop in Bootcamp ( Of course ). then follow Itsage method., Download this: Intel Thunderbolt Software version 16.2.55.275,

3. after that, you can run the exe ( remember to put the dll file in the same folder )

I could do it. I believe I had to unplug/plug after updating the thunderbolt drivers and before updating the firmware.

I had the same PD Firmware version check error as other people in this thread on my Spectre x360 (Late 2016, 13") and it was solved by uninstalling the thunderbolt software and installing this version instead.

Flashing a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU firmware requires a couple of things. The first one is a compatible Intel Thunderbolt Software with the Thunderbolt FW Update Tool. Version 16.2.55.275 seems to be the one to use. In Bootcamp mode, you won’t be able to run Intel Thunderbolt Software but it doesn’t matter. The flashing tool checks for a compatible Thunderbolt drivers in order to run and the existence of 16.2.55.275 is good enough.

Next is the recognition of a matching Thunderbolt device in the Thunderbolt FW Update Tool. One confusing thing I’ve noticed with my TB3 15″ MacBook Pro is that if the eGPU is working well, the FW Update Tool cannot recognize the Thunderbolt device. You can either remove the GPU from the enclosure or hot-unplug then hot-plug to yellow-bang the eGPU. For a full explanation and procedure, read this stickied how-to.

I was able to update the Mantiz Venus firmware without issues. Here are the screen captures of the full process.

1. Welcome message upon opening the EXE file from  https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6wRo_LTvPUUdGVCVk1XYVNZY1k/

2. Thunderbolt FW Update Tool should recognize TUL, TBX-550CA Thunderbolt device under Port 1. If you don’t see anything under Port 1, remove the GPU from the Mantiz Venus.

3. Clicking Next will get the flashing started. If you get an error at this step, it means your Intel Thunderbolt Software is not compatible. Install Intel Thunderbolt Software 16.2.55.275 and redo this process.

4. When the new firmware update is complete, you’ll see this message. Close the FW Update Tool and restart.

Here are the Before and After readings in AIDA64. It shows improvement in H2D speed but I didn’t see changes in Unigine benchmarks.

You're right, I'm certainly going to try Potplayer. Who knows, maybe it works better. The thing is though that I can get madVR to work, it's just that the performance is massively degraded, because the Video Engine in the GPU doesn't seem to be used for decoding. When I use EVR Custom Presenter in MPC-HC (which is the standard renderer) with DXVA2 native or copyback, it freezes. And that always worked fine in the past (before I got a TB3 eGPU and the T570), which is why I'm thinking there has to be either a problem with my configuration or it's an inherent incompatibility when connecting a GPU via TB3. When I set the output in MPC-HC to VMR9 as you suggested, it shows right there that VMR9 apparently doesn't use DXVA. The weird thing is that I get the same freeze that I get with EVR CP, so maybe my issues aren't related to DXVA after all? In any case, I'll give Potplayer a try today, thanks!

But shouldn't be also some duties apart VAT? Here, with a 22% VAT it should be a final of about 32-35% more...

Yeah I was waiting cautiously for the Mantiz Venus to be made available on Amazon. But then I got an email saying free shipping in EU ? Well... There's some deals you can't refuse.

Mail says its temporary though, as a way of celebrating the release of the Space grey variant. Just something to keep in mind.

@franketto: I tried Potplayer just now and I have to say that it's working great! For whatever reason, Potplayer seems to be able to normally utilize HW decoding. The image quality is probably not quite as good as it could be with madVR, but at this point I'm just glad to have buttery smooth playback again. So thank you very much for your suggestion, for now this is all I need! 🙂

eheh, have you seen? 🙂

Anyway, I put also on potplayer the madVR, so you can have max quality also with it. You should change settings renderer.

Import items is only charged by import duty about 18-22% depends on EU different countries, but no more other VAT.

yes, we now provide the free shipping to N.A, EU, Asia.

with this, it is even cheaper than we sell in EU Amazon. ( VAT about 22~25% to be paid by customer ) + Amazon commission, we probably will start there by 429 Euro which is higher than the 389$.

I speak fo my country, Italy.

I knew that there was about 6% duties on electronic imports like pc + 22% VAT. Now I read that on july 2016 they cleared this on 134 products and it will perfect this clearing on 2019 upto 95% of products.

So now I don't know if your Mantiz is or not cleared by duties... It could be inside those 134 products or not.

I will inform better.

I don't know.

https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/individuals/buying-goods-services-online-personal-use/buying-goods/buying-goods-online-coming-from-a-noneu-union-country_en#customs_declaration

"VAT, Customs and Excise duties are likely to be paid on top of the advertised purchase price."

The best way to find out is to use national customs duty calculator. It depends on the product code in TARIC database. I recall that "computer parts" and similar products should have 0% customs duty. In addition, if you do customs declaration by yourself, there should be no "customs clearance fees" to be paid to a shipping agent.

Just to be absolutely sure, there are 2 folders in the zip (_MACOSX and FwUpdateTool_TBX-550CA_NOMOD_Mantiz). Are these 2 folders supposed to be simply unzipped into the same folder?

Where does these numbers come from? What is "taxes for anticipated charges"? What TARIC code? Did you fill and submit the customs clearance form by yourself? The same rules should apply to all EU countries.

From those numbers they have applied a 2,5% duties on value+shipment. I don't know how they catalogue that expansion card...

Here is the list of all custom duties: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=OJ:L:2016:294:FULL&from=EN

I have not found any item at 2,5% of electronic components such mantiz... so maybe they applied a flat tax rate, but that should be applied only to private to private shipping that should not be this case...

"If you are the person who submits the Customs Declaration, a courier company may offer to make the declaration on your behalf, but there is normally a charge for this service."

It's easier but you can reject such an offer from DHL and submit the form to the customs agency by yourself.

He could have not payed the 13,5€ as you said, but not the 2,5% duties of 10,56€.

And how do you compile the form to the customs? With which TARIC code, which duties percentage?

As I showed you, there is no clear choice for this unit, so...?

No clear category for eGPU enclosures. From my experience, the Customs should help if there is something to correct, and they normally just charge a percentage that is determined by the tariff:

"Customs duty is calculated as a percentage of the customs value of the goods:

The percentage or rate varies depending on the type of goods. You can check the tariff applicable in the TARIC database.

The customs value is made up of:
the price paid for the goods,
the insurance cost,
the shipping cost."

Exact, so in this confusion, it's sure you will made it wrong, so you must loose a lot of time with duty office to correct it delaying the shipping. It's a lot better to pay other 13,5€ and be sure it is good (for them...) and don't loose your time.

Anyway the point is there still are duties for Mantiz apart VAT, at about 2,5% rate.

You can ask the correct code by email before you submit the form, and the form can be submitted electronically to the Customs if your country has such a service.

But time is money and I would also pay customs clearance fees to DHL 😀
