I made my tests with a with a GTX970 on Mantiz on a TB3 @2x (Asrock Z270 mini-itx) and also on a Lenovo Yoga 720 the same TB3 @2x, same results :

I used Caldigit active TB3 2m, the same as passive TB3 0,5m:

--------------- BEFORE:

1) without SSD

BEFORE noSSD

2) from Pc to SSD

BEFORE FromPcToSSD

3) from SSD to pc

BEFORE FromSSDtoPc

---------------  AFTER:

1) without SSD

AFTER noSSD

2) from Pc to SSD

AFTER fromPcToSSD

3) from SSD to pc

AFTER FromSSDtoPc

SSD + Ethernet is the same as single SSD: it lowers SSD speed, maintaining the Eth 100MB/s.

Note for french buyers : I just payed 104€ of customs clearence fees from DHL. Which put the total for my Venus at 337.65€ (converted by PayPal from 389$USD) + 104€ = 441.65€.

You may want to wait for Amazon :') I didn't expect the customs fees to be so high

It's the same calc I did before for Italy:

441.65-13,5€ about of fixed DHL costs = 428,15€

428,15:1.20 = 357€ (removed VAT 20%)

357-337 = 20€ duties that is  little more than 5%... more than 2,5% here in Italy...

French VAt are at 20%.

In a previous post, nando4 said:

What is the total ports bandwidth available if the eGPU is being used under 100% load?

    5Gbps USB 3.1 Gen1 hub (Mantiz Venus)

    4-lane TB3: 5Gbps * 22/32 = 3.44Gbps or 430MB/s
    2-lane TB3: 5Gbps * 22/32 * 16/22 = 2.5Gbps or 313MB/s

The calculation: 5Gbs is the USB controller input.  32 is the 32Gbps x4 3.0 TB3 enclosure controller. The 22 is the 22Gbps TB3 attenuatated ‘data’ link back to the notebook courtesy of Intel throttling. For a 16Gbps 2-lane TB3 notebook, a further 16/22 attenuation occurs on the notebook side."

So, now I would say, that even on TB3 @2x, you could get speed more than 313MB/s (to be further diminished for overhead):
tests done with Samsung 850Pro 1TB, using eGPU bandwidth with Cuda-Z in the background:
with both static and dynamic FW I got 374MB/s D2H and 310-320MB/s H2D.

Are you experiencing issues with the CalDigit active cable? I've read on the Amazon page Q&A that it's not advised to be used with an eGPU. Also one of the reviews says connection drops if the device is charging and passing data at the same time.

Caldigit seems to work well on data. But of course Lunchbox and ikir tested more days than me so they are more trusty on this Smile

But I have a problem with Lenovo Yoga 720:

When connected without its ali, the battery does not get charged from the Mantiz... is it possible Lenovo Yoga is not PD capable??

Sadly I discovered Lenovo Yoga 720 13'' has PD, whilst my Lenovo Yoga 720 15'' does NOT have PD! Bad design, or maybe it was the GTX 1050 + i7-7700HQ that's too much...

@franketto, I’m very sorry to hear about no PD on the 15″ Yoga 720. Man, on paper a quad-core HQ and option for iGPU-only made this machine such an appealing prospect for eGPU host. Then we keep finding short-comings.

Sorry if this has already been asked and answered, but I've just installed an SSD into my Mantiz and there is Win10 installed on it (installed using this tutorial form Mantiz's own blog -  https://mymantiz.com/blogs/news/how-to-install-window-10-on-an-external-ssd-for-mbp-mantiz-venus-sata-ssd)

I can boot into Windows when this SSD is in a USB 3.0 enclosure perfectly fine, but here I don't get an option to do this, as after I hold the option key on start only Macintosh HD shows up.

The SSD is recognized in MacOS and mounts seconds after I login, but I can't boot from it.

What am I doing wrong?

Just got my Mantiz Venus today from Amazon, construction quality is great and it has been plug and play with my 2017 Razer Blade.

2 Questions:

1) Even after updating the firmware, any peripherals I have connected to the Mantiz constantly connect and disconnect. Anything that can be done about this?

2) The case fan is really quite loud in either configuration. Can I leave it disconnected? All I have in there is my GPU (GTX 1070 with aftermarket style cooler with 2 fans).

I just discovered the Lenovo Yoga 720 can have TB3 @4x!

The 15'' normally has 2x because it has the GTX 1050 (8x connection) plus the Intel integrated 630. So, if you disable the GTX 1050 from BIOS, you still have the iGPU and if you connect the TB3 it becomes a 4x! Not bad.

But in my tests (on professional programs like Resolve) you will get more fps using a GTX970 on TB3 2x + GTX 1050 than the GTX970 alone @4x.

Tomorrow I will post some data, comparing also the Lenovo with the other desktop pc Asrock  I have, even that with TB3 2x, vs the same Asrock with 16x pci-e, same card 970.

Next week I will test Zotac 1080Ti Mini on the Mantiz on these systems.

@franketto, this would be wonderful if it’s possible. I tested the 15″ Yoga 720 with iGPU only and unfortunately the Thunderbolt 3 connection attached to x2 PCIe lanes. You can see PCI Express x2 Bus #6 under PCI Express Root Port #9.

I'm sorry itsage... I was in a hurry and I got better fps than when I used the Mantiz with the GTX 1050 not disabled, so... I thought I got 4x!

Instead no, it's still 2x.

But isn't this strange? With the 1050 active but not used by the prog, the TB3 970 2x is slower! What's going on?

Next I will post the data.

TNR 04   6 10 11-12 12 15 10-12
TNR 06   5 7 7-8 7-8 10 6-8

The tests that stress GPU are the 09-66 blur. The TNR is a mixed one, where CPU has its role.
As you can see using Internal display is awful. You must always use an HDMI connected to eGPU...
With 1050 on, but not used by the prog, you get 24fps that becomes 28 if you disable 1050. And TNR goes from 24->36!
This is what I'm marvelled... why?? Does this mean the TB3 2x is more throttled by the 1050 active, even if not used??!

So, disabling 1050 makes Lenovo TB3 2x the same power if put on a desktop pc (28=28, 36, slightly less than 39, but the other are identical).

If you use instead the combo 970 + 1050 you surpass even the desktop pc with pci-e 16x!! (apart the first 09blur of 35 vs 32, due to quite pure bandwidth use with light power CUDA cores)

Overall, TB3 @2x is something only -16/20% on blur GPU test, whilst regards the pci-e 3.0 @16x bandwidth is -88% !!

BTW:
I put some colors on the table, but it does not display correct (in edit mode they are there, but when posted, they disappear...)

My guess is when the 1050 dGPU was active, the benchmarks were running off the dGPU and not eGPU. It was showing the wrong information which led to the confusion. When you disabled the dGPU, the benchmarks were able to use the eGPU.

No, Resolve shows which gfx card is using and I deselected the 1050  on purpose to see only the 970. In fact I tried also the 970 + 1050 and the results are much faster as expected. I also tried the 1050 alone and it has slightly slower results than the 970 alone.

Hey, I have a blade stealth and planning on buying this mantiz venus and evga gtx 1050ti sc. Will it work??

Is your performance drop any better now??? I want to buy this but if this machine has that big performance drop... I would go for razer core.. so plz help.

Which performance drop are you referring to?

There are these:

1) drop because of TB3 @2x

2) drop because of internal display connection

3) drop because TB3 + internal 1050 gfx card connected, even if not used

1, is not Mantiz specific and you will not have this on Blade

2, it seems it is related to how TB3 works, so even this one is not Mantiz related (but I'm asking confirmation from guys here in the forum, as well: it would be good if it could be a way to use the internal display without that performance drop (It's not always that easy to connect an external monitor)! But I suppose it's not possible...)

3, I don't know... Could this be a Mantiz related problem? It is strange indeed... Anyway does Razer blade have a dedicated gfx or only the Intel iGpu. If it has not gfx card, there is no problem.

BTW

I even found out another strange (serious) problem with Mantiz: I was testing the 1080Ti and it works well.

BUT, always when the Lenovo 1050 is enabled from BIOS, apart the performance drop as already mentioned, there are also some sudden shutdown/restarts of the Mantiz without reasons... Not a power problem for sure (even when not in heavy use and I monitored with a meter); I don't know... For sure it is not possible/advisable to use Mantiz 1080Ti + 1050 active: I would have disabled from BIOS anyway because of performance, so not an issue for me, but this one is a worst problem than that. What's this?

I will post 1080Ti stats when I'll time.

I've been thinking about a dock for my Macbook Pro, and ideally I want it so I'm only plugging 1 cable when I use it. Since this enclosure has 5 USB ports, Is it possible to attach something like this:  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VDVCQ84/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I3E5PA8G00PICN&colid=2L7NHUG8WLURW  to extend the USB port count? Since the said hub has its own Power brick, I was wondering if it would work if its attached to one of the ports from the enclosure and drive 7(anker data ports) + 4 (venus) ports.

Thanks

Disabling the 1050 it goes from 30 to 46fps on the 09blur and 31 to 49 on the TNR01.

Again never use internal display: awful results.

Instead quite shocking to compare to a Mac TB3 4x: I will ask because it seems impossible it's better than the 1080Ti on pci-e 16x...!!

The first line 60 it's not real, is limited by the display 60Hz. The 18blur instead it goes from 44 (pci-e16x)  to 48 (TB3 4x) ??

So I'm not convinced on that.

After all, I'm satisfied with my combo Mantiz+1080Ti, even if used TB3 2x.

The only very limiting factor is the internal display problem... Any idea if possible to solve?

Is it possible to power off the TB3 connection without physically unplugging the cable?

Through a SW command, like espelling USB devices on W10?

I posted a video documenting the sudden poweroff of Mantiz with Zotac 1080Ti Mini when in combo with the internal GTX1050 of Lenovo Yoga:

relé shuts down at 26'' you hear the click and see the Zotac light powers off for a second.

The Mantiz is all opened... because I made a huge mod to it: I will show you next. I already finished and all working well, but I must wait for a last piece from China and then re-mount it. Smile

I installed the Noctua NF-R8 redux-1800 PWM today in the Mantiz Venus, using an Asus Strix GTX 1080ti OC.
Got additional M4x30 screws for that which fit perfectly.

I'm observing the following.

  • With side panel mounted (closed) the GPU Temperature remains at about 77 °C. The enclosure itself becomes quite warm/hot.
  • With side panel taken off (open) the GPU Temperature is about 65°C. The enclosure is only a bit warm.
  • It's much quieter.

With the original Mantiz Fan and side panel mounted (closed) the temperature was at around 71/72 °C as far as I recall, it was loud and the enclosure was at normal temperature (outside).

Now I'm wondering ... would you guys rather recommend putting the side panel on or leaving it off?
Also, would you rather recommend the connector on the left (first one) or the one on the right?

I fitted a Noctua NF-A8 PWM Fan to mine. I used 12mm M4 machine screws / bolts to hold it in place (the bottom of the case is threaded). This meant I did need to use the screws supplied with the fan to attach the grill though. If you are buying bolts for this, get 30mm as that'll go through the guard and the 25mm depth of the fan and screw into the bottom case.

Does anyone have the number of drop FPS on the EGPU with the ssd mounted on the Mantiz Venus. Like Windows Boot camp on Macbook pro and install games on SSD on the Mantiz?

I am try to figure it out what is the better config for this Mantiz? I don`t want lose space in the macbook(its manly for work) with games, but trying not to lose performance in the EGPU in games... if i could use the SSD in the Matinz , the config will be much simple and cleaner.

What do you think is the best config, performance/use of I/O of the Mantiz?

Thanks!

Been using my Venus flawlessly since it delivered earlier this year (original group buy from this forum), then experienced some strange power behavior and decided to check my RX 580 GPU in my 2012 Mac Pro last night. Big mistake. Looks like I managed to bust off some resistors while trying to angle the GPU out of the enclosure :(. Really kicking myself. PSA: Be careful!

John at Mantiz is beyond helpful and was very responsive via twitter. So far, phenomenal customer service. I'm shipping my board to them for inspection/repair.

The MBP with type C Thunderbolt Port & Mantiz Venus are all Intel Thunderbolt Certified device which means both of them are under PD regulation ( Power Delivery ). It will not harm your battery.
