After nearly 4 hours of trying different things, running into some problem or the other, I finally got the Mantiz Venus + 1080Ti to work in Windows on my 2016 RP455 15" MBP! The main problem for me was external SSD based Windows installation, since you cannot select that as a startup disk from macOS. Only with external display though. The laptop display has the Windows startup screen, as if it has hung during initial OS loading. And in device manager, the iGPU does not show at all, neither does the dGPU, just the eGPU.

Not a perfect setup, but it does what I want! Incredibly happy with the purchase. Time to start playing some games!

I haven't tried the Venus in macOS yet, but I mainly got this for gaming in Windows.

So you were able to install Windows 10 to the external SSD?

Yup,  I actually did that months back. 3-4 months back, and was gaming on the RP455 dGPU. Obviously the new setup is way more powerful!

I am ordering one now. Is it expected to work straight out of box with Razer Blade Stealth (2016) and Asus Strix GTX 1070? Can it also charge my laptop while gaming?

Your assessment is right on. It will work with your Razer Blade Stealth and GTX 1070. Charging will also work.

Here's a photo update I saw this morning on Twitter. Packages are on pallets and seem ready for DHL to pick up.

Just got my device but it won´t connect with Blade Stealth (Kaby Lake). When I start my laptop it only shows nameless "Base system device" on Windows device manager but it won´t recognize any Thunderbolt device. When trying to install new Blade Stealth bios firmware I get message that says I have to connect Razer Core and then continue firmware installation. Any idea how to proceed?

When you contact Razer support can you post the solution on this forum?

I also have a blade stealth, but I haven't got my mantiz venus yet

Hi, I just received my Mantiz Venus eGPU! I'm stoked!
Everything worked out of the box. The USB, power delivery, display output, and ethernet.

However my only issue is driver installation for NVIDIA drivers. As I'm installing the GTX970 driver, it says no compatible hardware found. And then Nvidia Web Helper says "Please insert a drive into D:/". That is the USB drive slot in the Mantiz Venus..

Has anyone encountered this problem? Because of this I cannot launch Nvidia Control Panel and change my monitor to 144hz.

Hey, ye, I had the same problem. Uninstall the driver from the Device Manager and try again. That helped me. I also didn't use the downloaded drivers from the nVidia website as that gave me problems, I used the device manager to update it. Good luck!

Ok. I just needed this Thunderbolt driver from Razer´s support page  http://drivers.razersupport.com//index.php?_m=downloads&_a=viewdownload&downloaditemid=2313&nav=0,350,561,562

Just installed this and laptop recognized Venus instantly.

Nice, I got the driver to work. Smile Thanks.
Now I just need to make sure the performance of my GTX 970 is working.. I'm only getting like 70 FPS in CS:GO. Yet when the card was in my desktop, I was at 350 fps. :S

Thanks for the reply XVCG - I worked through most of my issues last night:

  • Gog Galaxy UI seems to have known problems installing to an alternate path, I downloaded Witcher 3 using the website instead and it installed ok on to the Venus SSD. I now have a game installed into the Venus each from Gog, Steam and Origin. I was pleased to see 25GB of download transfer from the laptop SSD to Venus SSD in just a couple of minutes.
  • Swapped out the wireless Microsoft 900 keyboard and mouse for wired - mouse is now behaving. I think you are correct about the compatibility issues as I see the mouse a little jumpy on my pluggable TB3 docking station too, but fine when the dongle is plugged directly into the USB on the laptop. Wired is fine for now.
  • I swapped the GTX 660 out for GTX 960 (my top card - I'm not a power user but prefer quiet/price point) - the fans on the 960 do not spin under 60 deg C at which point the PSU fan is audible. The PSU fan is quiet enough, but is annoyingly clicky and also runs even when the laptop is powered down (and drawing 0 amps), only stopping when the TB3 cable is removed. The system fan noise is a show stopper for me given the use case - I don't always want to hear "rig" fan level noise when the laptop is docked as I could be doing office work, I want silence at this time. I'm guessing I'm not alone on this point given the different scenarios egpu opens up for non-power users.
  • Witcher 3 now runs fine on the 960, so does Dragon Age Inquisition and Skyrim. I noticed the screen blanking out in Valley, but ok in Heaven and Superposition. I'll try Valley again after a reboot.

Only problem for me now is the fan noise. I'd like to know more about how to monitor the Venus system board temp, especially when the GPU fans aren't spinning under 60deg. I could take a hacksaw to the floor of the unit and fit a wider fan, but I suspect the PWM could be tweaked somehow before I start cutting.

HI all:

I did discuss with mechanical & thermal engineer regarding the system fan noise.

you can see there are 2  four pins, we are now using the 2nd one. ( counting from the left). and I would like to explain the first and the 2nd.

a. both of the 4 PIN are with the PWM/Fan control and with the MCU inside of the mainboard. but just detection location is different. first 4 PIN ( count from the left ) detect is PIC-e area which is just under the GFX, 2nd  4Pin MCU detected the power delivery IC ( TI 65983 ) .

b. Origin design for the board are 2 system fans, but we found the GFX its own fan are now good enough, we actually dont need to have more system fan to solve GFX heat. but PD ( TI65983 ) supplying 20V x 4.3A , it cause the board to be 60 degree. So we  use the 2nd 4 Pin system fan to assist to cool down the system thermal.

c. Cross check with TI, we are too conservative about the the power delivery thermal. FIrst, Power delivery is not 24 hours 100% supply to the Host. it can charge the host in just 60-70 Min. 2nd, TI component spec is much higher than 60 degree.

d. we recommend User to switch the system fan from the 2nd 4 pin to the first 4 Pin. ( count from the left ).

e. PPL are compared with Sonnet 350W Apple development  kit. Yes, no need to compare, sonnet 350W development kit is more quiet, because they dont need to consider the power delivery component thermal issue. 2nd. they are using the 1225 VS Venus 8015 system fan. But since we recommend user to do the ( d ). both these 2 systems will not be huge difference in noise.

Any question, leave your message here , Twitter, FB or mail to : Support@mymantiz.com
