Just spotted the black Mantiz Venus... looks awesome!
Will group buy members get the chance to pick this version before deliveries start?

Thank you. Unfortunately the black color is a prototype, we made it for testing the RCA, Hardness, anitscratch, Rusty..etc. It is a certain distance & time to mass production. Space grey will be the next color option we did the test. I'll post it once it is ready.

Interesting. If it's not too far past the remaining ~45 days for the silver version deliveries, I might consider putting my pre-order on hold until the black version is ready.

Any ideas on timelines? Would it be possible to voluntarily delay delivery of my group buy model in order to receive a space grey one?

Not that I'm complaining about the regular silver one, but it would be nice if it matched my new MBP lol. 🙂

HI

There's no promise about the delivery date for the other color option. But we keep trying, testing and generating the interesting stuff for the future.

Hello All,

I'm part of the bulk purchase of the enclosure. But i've read several different information about the power wattage on the USB-C connector.

Can anyone confirm that its 87 watt, so a Macbook Pro 15 inch will be powered by it?

Cheers

Martin

Sorry about the mess informations.

We started from 60W and then we upgrade to 85W and in the end, we successfully curve the thermal issue and turn it to 87W.

A new FW with the CUDA Z fix + 87W PD will sent to Itsage for further testing. Certainly it will PD to MBP. 2016 Late

Here you can see that in the specs page:  https://www.apple.com/es/macbook-pro/specs/

I think that these guys in Mantiz are trying out everything in order to get the best product out there, and I am sure they did their homework... Even though, what did you heard? Could you please point us there?

Perfect!! I haven't any doubt.

And by the way, @Mymantiz_John, I would like to know if the case will have a window, like the one you have in your website, or just the holes (I prefer the window, as it was the first design I had seen). And another stupid, thing, could be a possibility that at least one of the usb extra ports you provide in the back, could be a usb-c, just to have more connection possibilities? Just 2 stupid questions, but is worth to ask  😉

1. In the beginning, there was a window, but we found the mesh is too close with the GFX and the heat of the GFX will melt the glue of the mesh, so gave up the Mesh instead of using the Holes. To be honest with you, it really cause a lot of molding & increase the production cost.

2. if any USB turned to USB-C, we need to consider the USB-C is going to do the power deliver to the other device. otherwise it won't be a REAL USB-C. And consider the whole power consumption & output, we gave up USB-C.

3rd. it is difficult to explain to customer which one is TB3 USB-C, which one is just regular USB-C. You can imagine how many users will complain to us by a mis-operation.

1) Completely understandable!!

2) But now with the 550W PSU, it is more than possible, but I understand the mess.

3) It is supossed, that the customers are smart enough (this egpu thingy is not for anyone) to understand the difference between thunderbolt 3 and USB-C, and not complain.

Thanks for the reply!!

Hi @Mymantiz_John,

I have a few usage questions regarding the Venus:

1) Does the Mantiz Venus auto power on/off with the host connected via USB-C?

Put another way, can I leave the physical on/off switch behind the enclosure always in the ON position and allow the connection and powering on of a connected laptop to 'wake' the enclosure?-- I intend position the Venus underneath my desk and was wondering if I needed to reach down to flip the physical switch OFF too as I power down my connected laptop, or does the Venus automatically sense a lack of signal and go into an idle mode, cutting power to the eGPU and USB ports too?

2) Do the USB and Ethernet ports work even in the absence of  graphics card?

Say my graphics card dies and I am in the midst of replacing it, or simply decide to use the enclosure as an USB/Ethernet hub without a graphics card down the line, can I?

Thanks in advance!

1st, there's PSU switch in the rear site, if you turn the PSU on but w/o connect to the Host through the TB3 cable. The system is in standby mode. and if you plug TB3 cable to the host, the system is on. Of course you can switch off the PSU if you don't want to be in standby mode.

Simply saying: link with host= Power up your system

dislike with the host= system go to standby.

w/o the GFX in the PCI-E slot, the all ports are working well including the USB & Lan. it doesn't matter with PCI-e stuff there or not.

I received the new firmware (version 25.1) from Mantiz. I can confirm the H2D bandwidth concern is fixed. The bigger news is Power Delivery is now set for 87W. 😀

Great work from Mantiz. The Venus is the eGPU enclosure to beat atm.

Will this product ever be sold or distributed in the United States? I assume the $80 shipping cost is for overseas shipping? Unfortunately I just found out about eGPU's today so definitely missed the group buy.

Really good news, just a small question: is the power delivery stable? Someone commented at work, that the Asus case, which has 100W power delivery it is not completely stable, and  has ups and downs... Maybe a faulty unit that causes someones mbp has more cycles than should be... Just for curiosity. Thanks 😉

100W is the spec limitation, we are far away for the limitation.

and 87W had been tested by one of Apple SDK to test 0n/off, voltage stability for 1000 times w/o issues, this is also the key factor that Intel gonna approve the device or not.

@itsage, in your opinion and experience, how do you think that Mantiz could be beaten?

- Any USB-C port?

- Independent USB hub/Ethernet for not suck the bandwidth from the TB3 port?

- Narrower design?

No, if you have just one, like in the XPS 15" (or most of non macs) and you are using the eGPU case... so it could be useful, IMHO.

We did this solution already. but we need to reduce one USB in the front which is a trade off solution.

Yes. 4USB 3.0 + 1 USB-C 3.1. But at this moment, it is not an option due to the enclosure Front USB x 2 designed.

John, does that mean existing orders will be delivered with 5xUSB 3.0 and new orders will have 4xUSB 3.0 + 1xUSB-C 3.1? Or will you be delivering 4xUSB 3.0 + 1xUSB-C 3.1 for existing orders?

Also, in light of new competition from Sonnet's Breakaway Box, can you offer a cut-down Venus (Venus Lite?) at the important US$300-delivered pricepoint? For eGPU use we require a single USB-C TB3 port.

The one key feature yearned from the budget TB3 eGPU enclosures is power delivery. Any chance of a 60W or more Power Delivery at US$300-delivered? The competitors are offering 15W only: https://egpu.io/external-gpu-buyers-guide-2017/#tb3-enclosures

EDIT: sorry I think that I got it wrong. So, it was done, but you are not implementing?? I do prefer just having one usb in the front, and have the usb-c in the back...

HI

1. 4 USB  + 1 Type C = PCB is ready, but it will NOT happened in the Venus form factor. it will be in some other on-going enclosure design.

2. Current Order including the future Venus Order will be always 5USB 3.0

3. I actually don't want to comment the price strategy from the other manufacturer. But we do care about the user's convenience, Such as most of Laptop ( except MBP ) is just one Type C attached. the PD is important for them. and to have large PD ( 15W almost equal to no PD ) we have to use the high-End IPC level DC2DC PSU. This really costs a lot.

IMO, the Mantiz Venus was designed to cater Late 2016 MacBook Pro owners. Therefore, USB-C port was not a high priority item. Power delivery and missing I/O were much needed. Price would be the determining factor.

Great work from Mantiz. The Venus is the eGPU enclosure to beat atm.

@itsage, in your opinion and experience, how do you think that Mantiz could be beaten?

- Any USB-C port?

- Independent USB hub/Ethernet for not suck the bandwidth from the TB3 port?

- Narrower design?

IMO, the Mantiz Venus was designed to cater Late 2016 MacBook Pro owners. Therefore, USB-C port was not a high priority item. Power delivery and missing I/O were much needed. Price would be the determining factor.

Fair enough. I didn't know the fact of it is indented for MacBoook Pro 2016 users... I was thinking in a more generic way... Thinking about improving it, in an cooler way IMO, should be to get it narrower with a rack server PSU like:

For the rest, is almost perfect, except just the USB-C port for non mpb 2016 users... and maybe could suck peripherals bandwidth from another TB3 port (or USB-B in non mbp 2016) in order to avoid sacrificing the bandwidth of the TB3 graphics connection...
