I am also interested in a group buy, I know that there was one here a month or so ago, is it still possible to join the waitlist?

If I am not wrong, the group buy was closed a while ago, sorry.

Cheers.

I just watched 9to5Mac's video of the Mantiz Venus and a big concern of his was the stock fan noise, how easy is the fan to replace; and if not, will most GPUs be fine if the fan was just removed completely?

It is easy to replace. Anyway the video show prerelease product so don't worry about noise.

actually the System fan is to be controlled by MCU. Bootup PWM is around 20%, RPM will be 1200-2000. The noise is around 22dB ( measure by 1M)Full Run PWM will be 80%, RPM 4000. Noise: 44.6dB. which is less noise than the graphic card. I think unless you are too close to listen, it shouldn't be an issue for users.

@Mymantiz_John, how is it going with the intel certification? Cheers.

Wondering the same. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Is it possible to ship it earlier under the "evaluation" tag like you did for itsage and 9to5mac ?   🙂

If the group buy is closed, I guess I'll have to go and get one myself ;).

On that note, the Mantiz website ( https://mymantiz.com/products/mz-02-venus) has the Venus listed as "coming soon", but it looks like you can add it to your cart and place an order. Does anyone know any details about this? E.g. Is it a pre-order that you would be placing? Is the website just out-of-date and Mantiz is shipping production versions of the Venus already?

Any info y'all have is welcome, and thanks for the welcome to the community, excited to be here :).

It's preorder but you pay the full price upfront. Is seems to be the best case around, so $380 + shipping is still a great value!

I am sure, than if you don't preorder, all the first batch will be sold in hours... so many people behind it. Till now, I think it is the star of the cases...

I ordered mine 2 weeks ago though the web shop and was already order number 1111... I payed the full price upfront...

Actually there were two shipping methods (80/160), but according to John only the 80$ one is valid. Ot is international shippong with DHL woth tracking number...

@John: can you give an estimation on weekly production volume (afer Intel certification) so that I know roughly when my order becomes available?

After Certification, production may reach to 350PCS/Per Week.

HI

We can only arrange the shipment after Product Cert. We just got the trademark & Technology license approval but the product it self is under certification, if everything goes fine, we should get a notification " OK to ship ". And for respecting the IP & agreement, we have to follow all regulations of Thunderbolt.

Hi John!

It's mighty hard to get in touch with you. I'd very much like to order in bulk. There is no contact form on your page, but maybe that's intentional for now.

Anyhow, when you can, get in touch with me.

But, they are not giving you any ETA or whatever?? I am courious to know what is the process?? You send it to them, they do all the tests and then they say to modify certain things, and you send it again, and so on...??

not really like that.

it is about like this: submit schematics-Review-modify-Samples- Resubmit schematics-review-Modify-Samples-Final products.-Profession Lab test- Issue report-Final product submit to safety Lab- Submit to I , review-" OK " to ship.

it couldn't happened a big mistake if we are in the " last review status ". because from Project Kick off, we had started the submit process.

So, after all does the ethernet port works on MacOS? Also, is there any GPU performance drop when the USB ports are being used or not?

Ethernet port works in macOS (driver required). I tried it on both Thunderbolt 3 and older Thunderbolt Mac.

IMO, the Mantiz Venus was designed to cater Late 2016 MacBook Pro owners. Therefore, USB-C port was not a high priority item. Power delivery and missing I/O were much needed. Price would be the determining factor.

As one of the above mentioned MacBook Pro owners, I agree...this is frickin perfect complement! Mine will be stashed under the desk, so I'm gonna jump on silver (although Space Grey would be so great). Added a Windows partition to my laptop last night and am staring at my gaming pc just hankering to start disassembling it.

As far I understand they are on separate lane/channel. 32Gbps for GPU and 8Gbps for USB-Sata-ETH

Thunderbolt separates it’s bandwidth into DATA (up to 22Gbps) and DISPLAY. The onboard USB/SATA/Ether runs off the Thunderbolt3 USB controller which is part of the DATA bandwidth allocation, shared with the eGPU.

If you want full 22Gbps bandwidth for eGPU use as well as USB/Ether/SATA then it requires:

* a separate dock to host USB/Ether/SATA  off it’s own USB3/TB3 port
*a TB3 enclosure that has a switched USB controller like the Asus XG Station 2. There you attach a USB-B cable to your system USB 3.0 port to activate the USB switch.

Is there any reason to think performance would be worse on  SATA expansion slot/USB/Ethernet performance if one was to use it with a TB2 older Mac? I'm pretty excited about this enclosure and would like to use it to extend the performance lifespan of my existing (mid-2014 15" MBP) Mac with the TB3 -> TB2 adapter. I know the GPU Mac OS performance would be slightly bottlenecked by TB2 (around 15%, right?) and I'm wondering if using the other I/O capabilities of this unit would accentuate the bottlenecking problem or not.

My second question is whether we know anything about availability. I'd prefer not to spend $80 on shipping.

My last question is how hot-pluggable is this for OS X? Like if I'm out with my laptop and come home, can I just plug in to this with my TB3->Tb2 adapter cable and expect the SATA, GPU, USB ports and Ethernet to just come on, or does it require a restart for them to start working?

I've tried to place an order a few times over the last few days, and I'm getting a "Payments can't be processed right now" message.  Does Mantiz not accept preorders anymore?

It's really getting close to have Intel Cert. Done, and we should close the shopping system to avoid selling/pre-sell/Pre-order for a On-going Cert. Device. It will re-opened once the Cert. is settled. Thanks for your patience.

Assume you were asking the GFX performance drop, due to the latestest research, bandwidth sharing to USB/Ethernet there are  "almost " no impact to the FPS.

Hot plugging depends by macOS, if Apple will support eGPU officially they will fix this. It is on Apple hands.

So that means it doesn't work now? Only if/when Apple lends official support?

Hot plugging? As far as I am aware, there is no way this can be done right now under mac os. I started a thread a while back about this:

I guess it's not that huge of a deal. Boot times are pretty quick with MBP SSDs. Just some hassle as I use my MBP in clamshell mode whilst at my main workstation.

I recall if you put the Mac to sleep, unplug, plug in, some enclosures can awake the eGPU and you continue work normally on macOS. However, waking up the Mac without eGPU results in system crash so not very useful.

AMD/Nvidia Mac drivers are not programmed with Thunderbolt connection in mind. This is not impossible, requires just a bit AMD/Nvidia/Apple engineers cooperation.
