My Core V1 has been annoying me recently... the fan noise and the fact the USB ports aren't really much use due to lag so I've swung from trying to find the smallest enclosure to going big and buying a Mantiz with a view to customise it into my ideal enclosure.

Plan is...
Replace stock fan with Noctura (possible a 120 as I have one kicking about somewhere)
Add in TB3 card with powered riser - drill out back plate for cables
Add in 500GB SSD for game storage.
Possibly PSU upgrade (modular? Semi passive?) - and recommendations?
Replace current Vega 56 GPU with a Sapphire dual fan RX 5700/5700 XT

I have all the parts (hopefully the correct riser - will go double check itsages threads).

The goal is to create a full one cable silent docking solution for use in both OS on my Macbook with LG 5K UltraFine, would love to hear any tips/advice if there is anything I have missed...

Parts so far

@eightarmedpet This looks like a fun project! The riser card you have is the same as the working one I used in this build.

@itsage THANK GOD FOR THAT and thanks for the link, I was fairly sure I bought the right thing but I've made mistakes before.... I'll see what connectors I have once it all arrives but I assume I will need a few adapters/additional cables.

Depending on GPU cooler I may try adding an additional fan, either to the side to blow heat out or at the front to do the same...

I believe the Molex plug is all we need to power the riser card. I didn’t really know what I was doing so I connected both to make sure. When I tried the same riser card inside Sonnet Breakaway Box [link], I only had the Molex cable connected. The PSU from Mantiz Venus has an unused Molex plug so you’re good to go.

@eightarmedpet,
so you prefer a Mantiz Venus over a Asus XG Station Pro? I thought noise was important for you 😉

@oliverb ha! If I had a non TB3 monitor I would almost defo have gone for an Asus XG Station Pro, or gone small and ITX card with a Zotac Mini box as they are on UK Amazon at a decent price atm.

The space and ability to mod the Venus is what lead me the decision, I can swap out PSU and fans and cram a TB3 and SSD card in there. I'm also getting the downstairs of my house re done so when the floors are up I'll get someone to lay some ethernet cables so I can hard wire in via the Mantiz rather than rely on wifi (which prob isnt the best for PUBG).

Mantiz just arrived and I've unpacked it and plugged it in - oh boy! I was expecting some noise but the enclosure on its own is silent, sure fans will ramp up under load but this is super encouraging as even at idle my Razer Core V1 whines away like a petulant toddler.

Build quality was better than expected too.

Argh, just wrote a long post then lost it.

TLDP(ost). Looks like Mantiz have upgraded the fan to a 120mm one, it sure isn't the wee 80mm and as a result the whole thing is quieter than both my Vega 56 when idle and my MacBook Pro. Under load the MBP and Vega are louder too in that order so not sure if I will even bother replacing the fan now.

Tried TB3 add in card but no luck, @itsage any idea what I'm doing wrong gong by these lights?

Windows booted slightly differently too which was interesting, going to see if it repeats the behaviour.

I would love to see your use case for that riser card (what would be your use case, how you end up installing it and how it will end up looking)
Also, I replaced the fan on my MZ-02 with a Noctua one, and it's pretty quiet. Also I replaced the PSU with a SilverStone SFX-L 700W PSU and it's very quiet!

@eightarmedpet My PCI riser card (same model as yours) is doing the same thing. Both blue 12V and red 3.3V lights are ON. I recall when I was able to use it successfully only the blue light 12V was ON. Not sure what had changed since the last time I used it.

@itsage hmmm that is odd... looking at the riser its the 3.5v which is maybe suggesting it wants another connection? Although You did manage to power it with just one previously correct? So I guess I would need a GPU power cable splitter - 8 pin to 1x 8pin and 1x6 pin for the GPU and the riser.

Interestingly boot appears more stable/predictable than the Core, famous last words, but I'm 2 for 2 W10 boots without any messing about via rEFInd.

@teltersat despite what I had read the Venus is pretty quiet already, maybe due to the new larger fan... plan is to get this to be the docking station the Balckmagic is but custom built with extras (SSD) and able to pipe the GPU through to my TB3 LG 5K.

Yes I had success powering this riser card with only the Molex 4-pin like you had in the photo. The very first time I attempted this I connected both Molex and PCIe 6-pin plug because I wanted to make sure it gets power.

@eightarmedpet the fan wasn't noisy, but the PSU was! There would be times where it would whine like a jet engine. Not sure if it was because of power constraints or a faulty PSU, but I'm happy with that SilverStone one!

@itsage well this is super frustrating and makes little sense... actually saying that I just remembered I never proved my riser worked as my test set up had the TB3 card in an Akitio Node. Maybe I need to hunt out another riser?

3 for 3 for rEFInd boots with the Venus, wonder if the newer TB3 chip (Ti83?) actually does make a difference...

@teltersat PSU is plenty quiet enough, wonder if that's been upgraded/changed too? Currently the only noise I am hearing is the Vega fan spinning as it doesn't appear to stop when not in use.

Going to ta @joevt here because after days of googling I still cant work out what the lights are all about and they tend to be quite wise...

I think the only riser I've had 100% success with is the expensive IT-GO ADP-099-31 #136
I've tried only a handful of risers though late-2018-mac-mini-wx-910032gbps-tb3-mantiz-venus-thunderbolt-3-monitor-output-macos-10-14-1-itsage

Maybe try applying power before and after applying Thunderbolt and DisplayPort cables?

Perhaps there was an update indeed -  my Mantiz was considerably noisy under any load and after the replacement all I hear is the actual RX580 that I have in there

That’s a good recommendation. Due to the number of wires/connectors I had everything already connected and ready to go before powering on the enclosure. Will give this a try and report back if this procedure makes a difference for my riser card.

@joevt I followed your recommendation and got the riser card + ALPINE-RIDGE AIC working! It took about thirty seconds for the HP Z27q monitor to get signal but everything worked great. @eightarmedpet you should follow this procedure and see if you can get the riser card to work with your setup.

@itsage cheers for sharing your findings!
So this sounds so simple I am worried I am misunderstanding...
Are you saying you fire up the enclosure with the TB3 fitted and then plug in all the GPU related cables?
Sis I see a pic where you are powering it with a 6pin rather than the 4 pin thing?

@eightarmedpet Yes it was very basic. I had the riser card powered through 6-pin PCIe power cable as seen in this photo. No DisplayPort cables connected on the back of eGPU and TB3 AIC at all. Once the Thunderbolt 3 connection was established and the system worked with the eGPU I connected two DisplayPorts from eGPU to TB3 AIC. Last step was connecting the TB3 cable from AIC to my adapter that connects the HP Z27q 5K monitor. About 30 seconds later the monitor lit up and MacBook Pro‘s internal display flickered indicating an external monitor was now attached.

I did a few more connecting procedures as @joevt suggested. However skipping a step would make it not work. To be honest I struggled replicating Thunderbolt 3 monitor output after that too. It doesn’t seem to be worth it given the extra costs and inconsistent results imo. Last thing I did was loopback testing in Boot Camp. I had the RX Vega 56 eGPU connected on the left sided TB3 controller and TB3 adapter to 5K monitor on the right sided TB3 controller. The performance lost is actually not that bad. They both actually worked through the same controller in Boot Camp too.

@itsage cheers for the info! Do you have a guestimate to performance loss because with the added complications of add in card implementation/initiation I wonder if I am actually chasing something that doesn't yield enough benefits - especially when the fact that the Mantiz makes booting more stable (had assumed the dual TB3 usage was the issue rather than the Ti82 chip in the Core V1).

I’d say the performance difference is within 5% on Radeon cards using XConnect. This has been the case in Windows for a while. There are some games that don’t play nice with loopback but for the most part Intel iGPU works very well with eGPU.
