Sapphire GearBox Review - Loud and Clunky
I too bought this eGPU case a week ago (using it with an RTX2070). The fans are only running when the unit is on, just like the blue light on the front. Actually the blue lights are brightest when the gpu is in use but when I disconnect it via Nvidia control panel, the light gets dimmer, and turns of fully after pressing the front button.
A firmware update to address H2D speed and PSU fan-off in sleep mode would make this Sapphire Gearbox much better. We can also replace the pair of 40mm fans with Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX or other quiet options.
I was looking to do this but after disassembling the PSU, the two 40mm fans are actually 20mm thick. Additionally, the stock fans have 8.8 CFM whereas the Noctua output about 5.5 CFM which isn't sufficient to keep the PSU cool. Unfortunately no stores near me stock 40mm fans that have a 8.8 or higher CFM 🙁
@gmb2112, I would recommend going with an eGPU enclosure that provides 100W for the 2019 16-in MacBook Pro. I've seen reports of the machine using more than the amount the original 96W power adapter. While 60W Power Delivery will still work and charge the machine, it may lose charge if the laptop is constantly under load.
