As I expected the switch from the RX570 Puck to the 5500XT Puck was painless. It did not require any additional setup under both OSes, just plug and play. However do note that I have a blind boot setup which means the HDMI port on the Mac mini is not in use, and I cannot see the boot picker and boot screen, and as a result iGPU is disabled in Windows. While using the RX570 Puck I can choose OS blindly by holding Alt at boot, after the switch this seems to no longer works, I have to use BootCamp tray icon in Windows and startup disk in macOS to switch OS.

By choosing the 5500XT version I'm missing out on the 8GB VRAM (which I believe is responsible for E12), but I still have the time to return it and get the 5700 version instead. However this one seems to be enough for what I do anyway, and if I really need more power I still have my 5700XT hackintosh.

@i0ntempest, Nice setup! I love seeing all four TB3 on the Mac mini being used. Can you comment on the performance difference between the RX 570 and this new RX 5500 XT Puck? Which model is the portable display to the right? In my 2018 Mac mini eGPU build, I use a 15.6" USB-C screen off the Mac mini for boot selection. Combined with the modified apple_set_os.efi v0.5 boot loader, I can use the native boot picker and keep the iGPU activated in Windows Boot Camp.

Lol thanks, actually out of the 4 devices only 2 are TB devices. The performance uplift isn't huge (see the Geekbench scores, that's about a 45% uplift) but it let me play Genshin Impact maxed out (except render resolution, the game allows rendering at 1.5x native) at smooth 60FPS and that's what I call enough Smile If I had the 5700 puck that'll prolly have an additional 30% uplift which is about a total 70% uplift from the 570 puck. There's also the architectural change which prolly can't be shown in synthetic benchmarks. Also coil whine is finally gone for good, my 570 puck is VERY whinny when doing any work.

That portable display is a GeChic 1503H connected to the HDMI on the puck. I'll try using the EFI mod u linked with it attached to the mini directly.

If you run Superposition on medium preset we can probably compare the difference between the Puck 5500XT and 5700 on MM 2018 (The benchmark names it as HIS XT for some reason but it’s Puck 5700):

@susurs I'll definitely try later. Also is that a 5700 or 5700XT? The pic shows 5700 XT but ur bio says 5700.

@itsage That EFI mod does allow me to use iGPU and eGPU together, but it borked my SANLink3 10GbE adapter under Windows... Before installing the EFI mod the system seems to disconnect everything before booting Windows and without this the adapter won't work under Windows.

Back to blind booting for now...

@i0ntempest, It’s Sonnet 5700 Puck, just reported wrongly as HIS XT device by the program. It will be the same for you as well probably.

@susurs I got 7856, so yeah that about a 35% difference. Not really worth it to spend another 2600CNY for that imo, it’s already a bit more expensive than official price, not to mention I have to wait 2+ weeks for the 5700 version to arrive (they only had the 5500XT version in the warehouse).

Also USB-C/TB of Mac mini in Windows is not really stable, hotplug sometimes won’t work and even (rarely) crashes the whole system. Any thoughts?

In the benchmark at the top right corner it’s showing the right 5500XT tho :/
