Unless Apple announces official support for eGPU, all Thunderbolt enclosures will require Goalque's script to enable external GPU.

What's interesting, is that Sonnet themselves posted this on twitter about the new Breakaway Box. Perhaps there's something we don't know just yet...

It's both Mac & Windows compatible. No eGPU cards currently have Thunderbolt compatible drivers for Mac OS.

@Zach: Boxes are just boxes. We need eGPU drivers from Apple. They meant to say: it’s certified for Windows PCs, possibly Windows Boot Camp compatible, no support for macOS.

Why they kill the great slim and tall design from Sonnet III-D...

Having a wider case like Sonnet Breakaway Box prevents accidental rollover  and provides excellent thermals for eGPU...:)

The above Sonnect Echo Express III-D next to the ATX PSU shows the important decision these eGPU manufacturers are making.  To manufacture a skinny enclosure requires a custom PSU which drives the cost up.

The low cost AKITiO Node, Sonnet Breakway Box (appears to) and Mantiz Venus are using cost-effective SFX PSUs. The next price tier Power Color Devil Box uses a slimmer 1U PSU (though has a huge enclosure). 1U PSUs may be cost effective but tend to use a small, noisy high-rpm cooling fan.

@nando4 the Sonnet III-D comes with 300W PSU (under GPU in picture) enough for every GPUs right now, they can just add 400W PSU for power hungry GPUs. Also they can add open space where the GPU is like Razer Core etc....  they kill great design and something different IMO... for now Razer Core and  BizonBox 3 (now they have and space gray) still have the best design and my AKiTIO Thunder2 mod of course Smile

... but this is only my opinion

But the bizon box with the external brick, is HORRIBLE!! External PSU is not the way to go, definitely.

The external psu can stay under the desk and it does not contribute to the increase of the gpu temparture.

I agree with you. Consider there's some serious design engineering that's gone into the Razer Core. Look at the custom PSU housed behind the video card shaped to match it's dimensions. From here:

These budget eGPU enclosures by Sonnet/AKiTiO/OWC are slapping in off-the-shelf PSUs to keep costs low.
