The website for the Omen Accelerator says...
My 17-an012dx has an RX 580 GPU so does this mean it will not work?
Maybe. It could mean that it will be as difficult to make work as any PC with an AMD dGPU. Search for similar systems in the Builds guide. Select Thunderbolt 3 from the eGPU Port menu. Select Nvidia from the eGPU menu. Enter "AMD Win10" in the text search. Add ^((?!Mac).)*$ to the text search to exclude Macs (but you might want to look at some of the Mac solutions).
@joevt, thanks for the tip, especially the exclude Mac part which I would never have figured. The biggest problem I have now is that the official spec for my laptop does not mention tb3 but there is a thunderbolt logo next to my usb-c port.
There's different versions of the OMEN by HP 17 Laptop PC. The manual shows two versions - one with USB-C and one with Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt icon is a lightning bolt with arrow at the tip of it. The USB-C port with HP Sleep and Charge icon is a lightning bolt with no arrow.
If you don't have Thunderbolt, then you need a different method to connect a GPU (M.2, mPCIe, etc.)
Thanks for the tip Joevt.
Mine has the thunderbolt logo by the port but I see no thunderbolt in device manager which is confusing. I will probably take the chance like you did and buy the Accelerator
@kenpile, I don't have the laptop or the Accelerator. Have you tried connecting a USB 3.x device to the USB-C port? If it is a Thunderbolt port, the the USB controller will be a Thunderbolt 3 controller.
