@jefniro I'm sad to hear that you dislike the project so much, but I do understand your concern. We will not go to Kickstarter before:

  • We get THOR I certified for Thunderbolt 3
  • Create a fully functional THOR I prototype

We have talked about this project for 5 months now, we must do this because we are startup (basically we need to spread the word or else nobody will know about us or our projects). Also it takes time setting up partnerships with other producers (we need this for the chassi, pcb, fans, etc).

We would love to hear constructive feedback from you, like how something should be improved in our products etc. Such feedback will help us create better stuff.

Once again I’m sorry that you don’t like this, but we understand. We will create a working prototype and then hopefully you can give us a chance.

Have a nice weekend,

Alexander Baranov

Love the look of this eGPU... I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, until I see a prototype at least. Hopefully it wont be another "Wolfe".

@Eightarmedpet We really appreciate it, thank you very much!

Personally, I don’t think a prototype is enough. If it was one could:

  • Buy a Razer Core (or something else with DSL6540C V1.0 PCBA) and take out the PCBA
  • 3D print a prototype -> Investment cast it (also called Precision casting) so we get a prototype of made out of aluminum
  • Put everything together and call it a successfully developed project, then go to Kickstarter

This would basically be illegal because we haven’t gotten Intel permission to use the Thunderbolt 3 chip in our product. So our main priority now is to get that Thunderbolt 3 certification for THOR I. This is a good way to avoid what happened to Wolfie.

We will always be transparent about how we do things, and we want to do it right. Doing it right takes more time, but we are sure that the end results will be worth it 🙂

Best,

Alexander

Alexander: 400W PSU simply won't cut it. You are trying to create a premium enclosure, and with water cooling, etc. - meaning you are targeting high end OC-ed GPUs.

Have you thought of power delivery over Thunderbolt?

@jefniro Thank you, I really appreciate that you like the renderings 🙂 Yes you are right, one needs to be very cautious when investing into Kickstarter campaigns. Some scams are due to lack of research (impossible-to-complete campaigns) and others are just plain fraud...unfortunately.

@Sky11 Thanks for the feedback! FSP Group USA has 500W option, so it's definitely a possibility but we want to do proper testing before we invest into these (significantly) more expensive PSUs.

Well we'll most probably use an existing PCBA so power delivery over Thunderbolt very much depends on the manufacturer of the PCBA and which firmware is installed at the time of purchase. But before we can get our hands on such PCBA we have to get Thunderbolt 3 certification from Intel.

We have a question for everybody, which 5050RGB LED strips would you like to see in THOR I? There are so many out there and we have a hard time choosing. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated (we are looking for premium light strips).

Best,
Alexander

Getting Intel eGFX certification is definitely the right first step. I hope you’ll hear the good news soon.

Intel TBT certification does include the power supply, so please use a better PSU from the get go... make sure it is single 12V rail with high OCP capacity (i.e. the power supply may be rated for 500W continuous power, but should be able to handle a short spike of much higher power).

Device will use the electrical part (PCB's)? If so, you will automatically receive certification from Intel... ?

I think the device will is very wide...
To narrow box, need a narrow PSU ...
I saw such PSU's (1U) only from server-manufacturers...
Usually the size of such blocks is 4 x 8 cmIt can be installed on a smaller edge, but then there will be a large height... )
Less common is 4 x 5 cm... I think, these should be used...

P.S.: If it will have 5 fans, what's the point in a liquid cooling?

Hey there! Glad to see an upstart like yourself getting into the eGPU market. Now is the time to make a name for THOR ZONE, for sure. Just like when Pebble carved out their niche as an inexpensive, open source smartwatch maker on KickStarter, the market is heating up, but there's still room for a startup to make big gains quickly in this space.

What I'd love to know is what THOR ZONE currently looks like as a company. Do you have any engineers or developers on board, or are you still recruiting talent?

Just found your post on small form factor.net regarding the engineering team. Next question: would they be available to talk about what THOR I does differently from the competition?

@itsage Thank you we hope so as well, we’ll do as much as possible on MJOLNIR I mini-ITX in the meantime. (Also, thank you for organizing our replies in a single post).

@Sky11 great criteria’s, we’ll discuss them with FSP Group USA and make sure they are met (the 500W flex-ATX PSU they offer is PLATINUM 80+, the 400W flex-ATX is GOLD 80+). Do you have a TDP reference document for OC GPUs? We haven’t seen many 400-500W cards out there, but perhaps we aren’t looking in the right places. We appreciate all the guidance 😊

@lifecom Well we have talked to vendors but we can’t purchase any PCBs before Intel certifies THOR I & THOR I Pro. We certainly think that their PCBs are great because of their size and layout, so as soon as we get TBT certification we’ll talk to them again.

The PSU will be included with both THOR I and THOR I Pro, the PSU form factor is called flex-ATX.

The fans are used to transport the heat away from the radiators. We’ll probably modify the radiators to accommodate 2 x 120mm fans instead of 5x40 (for quiter perfomance). Well there are several benefits for having such setup:

• Heat travels over longer distances (water block-> pipes -> radiator -> pipes -> back to the water block). Thus, heat is not constantly concentrated at the GPU and also looses energy while traveling through the water tubing (i.e gets cooler).

• When the heat gets to the radiators we have 2 options: wait for the heat to leave by passive air flows running through the enclosure our “push” the heat out using fans (we choose the latter for better cooling performance).

@RimsOnAToaster Thank you the encouraging words! Our goal is to compete on a more design/premium-focused level than average producers in the PC market.

Yes of course, we would gladly be up for that 😊

Best,

Alexander

I'm all for a premium eGPU, I have no interest in some gamery flashing light and plastic bits box and the current simpler cases feel like cheap PC cases (Sonnet).

Make something elegant and beautiful, priced be damned, but lets see if you beat Apple to it...

@Eightarmedpet That's a great way to phrase it! Whoever makes the first really premium eGPU (us or Apple), 2018 is certainly going to be a very interesting year for the eGPU market.

@theapplemaniac

Air cooled version: 399-499 USD

Water / Air cooled (Pro): 599-699 USD

The prices may sound high, but it’s because we want to create the best possible product (and are thus willing to invest into the best production techniques and not just simple sheet-metal).

If you target high end gpu, I would suggest upgrade the PSU to 650W+, plus with PD, MZ come with PSU 550W but still not enough for Vega 64.

How is it better than omen accelerator + watercooled card like gigabyte waterforce? Btw there are not info about ports (usb, audio, ethernet, SATA etc) in your video.

its been nearly 8 month since the last update, a lot has changed in this market since then, also i saw a post from them on their instagram that this project is on ice until the mini PC they build is up and running - which means for a looonnnggg time from now. (Not nvidia long time from now ^^)

Someone asked about ports, from how i understand it there arent any, which i would see as a great decision, ports are limiting your bandwidth which limits the GPU with nothing you can do against it. To fix this we would either need two cable eGPUS that use one only as a dock or we need a new higher bandwidth standard (unlikely for now).

Mostly the change in market (Razer Core X and Aorus) make this a very difficult call for a startup. I understand them somehow... I would still love to see this eventually.

@eightarmedpet @genium_me @lunchbox

Heey guys,

Somehow reply-notifications for this thread ended up in our spam folder, so sorry for the late reply. As @genium_me pointed out, we're working 100% on MJOLNIR I mini-ITX PC Case for the moment with the first prototype parts arriving in roughly 5 - 6 days. Once MJOLNIR I is delivered to consumers we'll start looking at THOR I again. The eGPU world has changed quite a bit and THOR I needs to be polished up before it's ready for the new market. The good news is that THOR I and MJOLNIR I are similar in terms of production techniques, thus making it easy for us to start production using previous experience. The bad news is that the whole Thunderbolt 3 certification process is still something that's not in our control.

Best,
Alex

My faith in your guys varies, maybe you are doing things the right way (slow and steady) and maybe you will get the Mjolnir 1 to market. I really hope you do because I will be first in line for a Thor 1, while the eGPU market has changed its still lacking the one thing I have been craving since the beginning - a high end compact eGPU enclosure.

Let me know the second it hits kickstarter....

@eightarmedpet I understand, we're just careful not to become one of those startups that gets funded, spends the money unwisely and then fails to deliver what was promised. IMHO one shouldn't launch anything on Kickstarter without having a fully developed production-ready product, a prototype and quotes from producers (preferably quotes for each part from multiple producers). Moreover, money should only be used when it's impossible to do something without it; developing and optimizing a 3D model only needs your time, website and marketing also preferably only needs your time, creating an investment casting die on the other hand requires money. I think this is good guideline for a startup, because the risk of failure is the highest at that stage.

@eightarmedpet That's really kind of you and will help a lot when we're back on THOR I again.

Since MJOLNIR I mini-ITX Case and THOR I eGPU are rather much alike in terms of design etc, you may be happy to see some real prototype parts for MJOLNIR I. More parts will arrive in the following weeks, but this is the type of quality you will see in THOR I.

Maybe there's a market for more compact eGPUs but I am disappointed/underwhelmed that this will use an existing PCB which won't differentiate this product enough from other eGPU's.

A PCB using a Titan Ridge controller that has DisplayPort inputs, a USB-C with DisplayPort alt-mode output, and an extra Thunderbolt 3 port would make it better than any existing eGPU.

Mac mini (2018), Mac Pro (Early 2008), MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), GA-Z170X-Gaming 7, Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 8GB GDDR5, Sonnet Echo Express III-D, Trebleet Thunderbolt 3 to NVMe M.2 case
