Hello guys!

Im running a Razer Blade 15 Advanced 2018 (1070maxq) with a 1080 inside the Omen Accelerator with a fresh windows install (1903 build 18362.418) fully updated, latest drivers from razer and intel driver & support assistant.

I am tryin to update my omen's thunderbolt firmware to the new DCH (Thunderbolt Control Center), but without any luck.

I've seen people being able to update their enclosures with this tool ment for the thinkpad dock - https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/options/thinkpad_tbt3_gen2_ws_dock_fw_v3164_new.zip

You are supposed to open the utility in the TBT_WHL folder, but it doesnt open, i've attached the error im getting down bellow.

The utility in the main TBT folder at least opens, but when i chose either of the .bin files (either in the main TBT folder or in the WHL) i get the error showed in the 3rd screenshot. Ive tried to install the Thunderbolt Control Center app from the ms store, but couldnt download it either like most of people failed from what ive read.

Im losing my mind over here not being able to charge the laptop from the eGPU since i want to leave my charger at work..

Could someone give me some advice?

TIA

Thx for the reply, i dont get it tho, do i have to update the firmware from a Mac device in bootcamp? Or should i just follow the same steps on my Razer?

TIA

You just have to follow similar steps for the Razer. You’ll find the same instructions on the download page for the driver.

Edit: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28735/Thunderbolt-3-Driver-for-Windows-10-for-Intel-NUC-Products

There might be a newer one though so get the latest if possible.

Cheers! I managed to update to drivers and get the TB Control Center installed, uninstalled the old TB software and my Omen shows and works just fine.

Tried again the lenovo update tool, but still not able to update la NVM firmware version, currently stuck at 33.0.

Any ideas?

TIA

This is the cmd return when opening DeviceFWUTool.exe (FwUpdateTool.exe didnt work either).

NVM firmware is the version for your Razer laptop’s Thunderbolt controller. You want to (presumably) update the firmware for the Omen. The easiest way to check an enclosure’s firmware is to plug it into macOS and check System Report. I also presume you have the firmware file for the Omen downloaded, which you would use. Use the generic tool in the WHL folder and not the one outside for firmware update.

Oh i see, my bad then. Yes, i think thats what i need to upgrade, at least that's what i've understood from @stefan_lachev 's post:

Managed to fix the charging issue by updating the HP Omen Accelerator Firmware. It was a bit of a chore as most of the update utilities out there don't work with the new DHC driver and Thunderbolt control center. For future readers the way to resolve is to Download the FW update utility from the Lenovo website:
https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/options/thinkpad_tbt3_gen2_ws_dock_fw_v3164_new.zip
In the zip there is a folder "TBT\TBT_WHL" In it is the new version of the Thunderbolt firmware update utility that works with the DHC driver and the new control center.

I.m pretty confident that the Omen accelerator app is not working, because of the new DHC driver. Unfortunately I have little/no hope for HP to release a new version of the app.

He had the same issue i do, his omen wasnt charging his laptop, i understand that this is how he fixed it. Not sure if i got it right, but if so, can i check/update omen's firmware anyhow in Windows? There's no chance for me to connect it to a macOS..

TIA

I’m not aware of a way. Maybe the best way to check is to update to the new firmware and see if it charges :p

Then what did @stefan_lachev update to lol? From the quoted post, he says “updating the HP Omen Accelerator firmware...” so there should be some firmware. Sorry if I haven’t been helpful as my knowledge of enclosure firmware releases is for the most part non-existent. I’ll tag @itsage in as well since he will likely be more familiar with the matter.

@mordo Are you trying to get upstream Power Delivery working from the HP OMEN Accelerator to your Razer Blade 15? This is not possible from what I recall. The USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port on this laptop is for data transfer and downstream PD (15W) to a device only. This Razer support article confirms no upstream PD from device to host on the Blade 15. You can flash the firmware of Thunderbolt 3 enclosure (as long as one is available). HP support page has the 1.00 Rev.A firmware for the OMEN Accelerator.

What the heck, they cant be serious? How the hell isnt it supported? It's a freakin 2500usd machine didnt even consider once that it doesnt have PD over TB3, oh my freakin god 😐

I mean ik that tb3 can PD up to 100w which isnt enough to game, but for minimum to medium workloads i think it wouldve work. Now i need 2 cables always plugged in my laptop and have to buy another PSU so i dont have to carry it from home to work and back. What a dissapointment.

TIB for your time and your answers.

@mordo I agree it’s a disappointment on many 45W CPU + dGPU laptops. The laptop vendors don’t place top priority on Thunderbolt 3 max 100W Power Delivery. They come with large power adapter that exceeds 100W and therefore the Thunderbolt 3 port cannot receive upstream PD. Apple is one of the very few vendors who designed their laptop systems around Thunderbolt 3 PD. The current 15″ MacBook Pro (45W CPU + dGPU) needs 87W PD. The upcoming MBP pushes it close at 96W judging by the Power Delivery of the Pro Display XDR.

Jesus, don’t load the lenovo dock .bin file. Just use the tool, you still need to load the .bin that is supplied by HP. Just don’t use the ild version of the tool bundled with the HP tool.
