Anyone able to test if they can power USB devices with the USB ports on the Saturn Pro

I was also unable to use an external DVD drive that I confirmed works with another computer. It would be awesome to know if it's just me or if I need to work on an RMA.

Thank you eGPU.IO friends. Smile

MacBook Pro 16" - 2.3 i9, 16GB, 1TB, 5500m (I added thermal pads to the VRMs); Mantiz Saturn Pro w/ PowerColor Red Devil 5700 XT (previously, a Gigabyte RX 580 Gaming Box) + LG OLED C9

what's your USB DVD power consumption ? Saturn Pro USB is 7.5W +/- 0.5W each.

Hello,

got mine delivered today. Looks like a solid piece, even though I haven't opened it up yet to install the GPU (still waiting for the GPU to arrive).

Now, a few issues I'm encountering: network doesn't work (I have tried to switch to USB LAN in the Network preferences of OSX, but no luck, I'd appreciate some help on settings here whether to use DHCP or other protocols and IP address), as do USB ports, both on front and rear, devices connected to those don't turn on and show up.

Is this because I'm on Mojave (10.14.6)?

Thanx

@mymantiz_john, it's an Apple USB SuperDrive. I found this comment: "A Superdrive requires 0.45a at 5vdc, well within USB range." I'm not sure how to translate that.

However, if none of the ports (front or rear) will charge an iPhone SE (1st generation), that would be unusual, correct? It seems like 7.5W would be more than enough since the phone uses a 5W wall charger.

How would I go about doing an RMA to repair the Saturn? I shipped it directly from Mantiz to my home in Japan.

@arzen, will try charging my phone tonight and report back. Maybe try checking charging rate for your phone with coconutBattery app. That superdrive should work - as indicated, 0.45A at 5V (2.25W) is well within spec. Typical USB 3.0 can do 0.9A at 5V (thus max 4.5W), but ports that implement USB Battery Charging Specification, which are most ports these days I think, can do 1.5A at 5V (thus max 7.5W).

@arzen @mymantiz_john, alright, you'll got me piqued. I tested this with my phone. Phone was at under 50% battery, so it would definitely not trickle-charge and would attempt to draw maximum power. Phone was connected to a 2018 15" MacBook Pro for testing. See the "Charging with" statistic.

@mac_editor, Nice research. I'll do the same test tonight with my phone. Smile

Yeah, 1.81W would be less than the SuperDrive needs... </3

@arzen, Yep, pretty much explains the issue.

@mac_editor, NGL, if this turns out the USB is really delivering less than the 7.5W that @mymantiz_john said it should be the specs... on top of your previous research and results with the built-in LAN... I'm going to be pretty disappointed by what's going on here.

The Saturn Pro is a beautiful device but seems like it has a lot of little "gotchas."

Thank you for testing with me! <3

@arzen, indeed. The USB issue might indicate that some USB hub manufacturers are likely cheaping out (or have "gotchas" to borrow your terminology) on components, as I did test with a multi-purpose hub which suffered the same issue. Might be worth testing Mantiz Venus.

I would expect such basic things to work. Only a spec needs to be followed. Plus don't see how hard all this is to test when I can whip one up in minutes. Perhaps having so many things in one complicates this, but still unsatisfactory performance. 1.8W is under USB 2.0 spec. Your SuperDrive would actually work fine on a "proper" USB 2.0 port (2.5W - 5V, 0.5A).

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.
