I received noise-related comments on eGPU.io forum on November 6, 2020.

I have known for a long time that the noise problem of Saturn Pro has always existed. The following is my advice to Mantiz technicians on September 23, 2020. In the conversation, I suggested that they replace the internal fan and listen to the changes in the noise.

Unfortunately, it seems that they did not do this. And their personnel have been insisting that their power supply is OK. However, as a consumer, I just want to say that what I care about is the experience, not some unknown international standards.

More than 40 days have passed. Until today, Mantiz has not actively contacted me. When I took the initiative to contact them, John of Mantiz finally admitted their problem, and then gave me a bit of science about human tolerance for noise.

By the way, I sent them the fan I removed before and lent them to study. Afterwards, Mantiz kept silent about the results of my fan research. Then today John told me under repeated questioning that they had dismantled the fan to pieces without my permission. I don't want to disassemble and replace the fan anymore, and the previous fan was cut out and cannot be easily installed back. So I asked John to pay me the market price of a Noctua fan, and the matter was over.

I appreciate John's manner of doing things, but I am dissatisfied with his results. Mantiz chose the wrong PSU customization plan.

1

1. Thank you for providing your fan, even you disassembled it from PSU with breaking the warranty. We got few cases including you about the Fan noise ( Sounds like the Whine ) , we research it and even sent the fan to Bell Lab to understand the frequency. Now we got the result. and ready to do a swap for those very limited quantity.

2. You asked us to pay your the Noctua Fan costs 200RMB ( about 33USD ) even you shouldn't disassemble the PSU. You can return the item if you don't like it. But you broke the PSU and ask us for paying your Unauthorized modification. To make you happy, we paid it.

3. You started to blame that we only service " Western " but refuse to " Chinese " demand. This is too far.

4. You started to blame the Taiwan independency issue even we already said we are also a part of China. This is too far.

5. You kept frightening saying you will put into review, speaking for consumers in China. Try to manipulate nationalism. That is too far.

5. I am so sorry that I really don't have time to listen your full conversation about how we treated Western good and Chinese bad.

Dear Young man, I forgive you because I don't have time. So I am happy to pay you 33USD even I don't need to do that. It is worthy for me to pay it to keep my ears clean and mind peace.

33 USD is equal to 218 RMB rather 200. It is too far. 200RMB is the market price of my Noctua fan which is working in my Saturn Pro. When I sent you the Alipay QR code, I marked the paying reason. If you don’t agree, don’t pay it.

Please don’t put your foolish political words into this tech forum.

MacBook Pro 2018, 15inch
ThinkPad X1 Extreme, 2nd generation
Mantiz Saturn Pro + AMD Radeon VII

Gigabyte GC-Titan Ridge
ASUS Thunderbolt EX3

I will finish my desktop PC in a few months. I only need one motherboard now. ASUS X299 Deluxe II and Gigabyte X299X Aorus master are the target motherboards.

@tiago_borba, regarding the USB PD issue, technically it does not impact me as I don’t charge my phone there anyway but regardless of measurements I’d have expected better charging performance. That being said, I noted earlier that I saw the exact same issue with a different USB hub so maybe that’s how things are. The ethernet issue on macOS is annoying for me though (probably doesn’t impact most people since 500 Mbps is enough for most).

So far I’m super happy with Saturn Pro. The only three things not perfect:

1) space gray color is very different than Venus and MacBook Pro

2) it is not very silent. I suppose I will replace PSU and case fan.

3) My unit is opening only if on a side, otherwise something is blocking it. Not a big issue.

the rest is perfect, no driver needed for Ethernet on macOS, strong structure, inside motherboard is clean and protected, it is even faster thanks to dual controller. A great product.

I am quite sad things have taken a turn to the political, and I can understand the frustration on both sides and deeply sympathize with both a professional being accused of allegations of discrimination, and a consumer feeling he is being discriminated. That said, I am an individual, and I can be political as long as the forum I am participating allows this. I can for instance say that someone complaining for a 33USD fan they decided to buy and recording stuff using 200USD microphones is a bit hypocritical, especially making political remarks, but people will be people, while sellers MUST be sellers. I do not think making private seller-customer conversations public is going to help the matter at hand, which is the PSU fan should be better.

I have been contacted by Mantiz support and should be provided a new PSU and a shipping label for the one I got. I'm quite confident it won't solve the issue, because I doubt that a new PSU (which I believe is either an off-the-shelf FSP product used in the Mantiz that likely cannot be modified by Mantiz, for multitudes of reasons from legal to their own warranty with FSP) will have a different model fan. FSP will likely not switch the fans they are supplying the Mantiz PSU with. I can only hope it gets better, but to be fair, I can't ask Mantiz more than this. They're likely already losing their profit margin just by sending me a PSU from wherever it is and shipping it back, and I respect that. That said, I hope I don't get a customs note for the replacement.

I think this is a good lesson for everyone involved. Let's be sensible and assume that complaining for small noise is the least of problems in an EGPU enclosure, and besides that, USB power and not catering to everyone's taste of color and finish, the Saturn Pro does very well on everything else. For Mantiz, I hope you keep listening to feedback as you seem to have and improve things for next batches or maybe a future product. I would also ensure customers are made aware of the characteristics of the noise on the product description, especially when they have to wait for a month for the product to arrive and pay the added cost of European taxes. Because in all honesty, this will likely save you money and prevent complaints later that will surely eat into your business.

I got a Mantiz Saturn Pro II and I have to say that it is by far the most versatile eGPU that I've used (coming from Razer Core X Chroma). As was mentioned in the previous few posts the only thing that detracts from this device is the fan noise and especially the annoying whine when the PSU fans start to crank up. For me the biggest issue is that the fan noise is not constant and the frequent starting and stopping of the PSU's fans coupled with the unpleasant sound is very distracting from the work that I'm doing.

I've contacted John via Facebook and he's offered to send a PSU replacement. I think it's really good that Mantiz continues to listen to feedback from the community and responds to it appropriately.

It will solve the whine because we recently just certified new samples sent from our PSU vendor. We knew the root-cause in very limited quantity and we verified the new PSU ( w/ New fan and bearing design ) noise will not appear in that annoying frequency.

Has anyone managed to get it working with a MBP 16” under bootcamp with an AMD GPU?

I’m trying with an RX 5700 XT on the latest publicly available Windows 10 build, with the latest Adrenalin Red drivers from bootcampdrivers.com.

I’ve tried the pci.sys swap method but it won’t boot (BSOD)

Tried with the apple_set_os custom EFI with the plug-unplug from left to right side USB-C port but no dice.

I did install Big Sur Public beta 1 or 2 some time ago so my Bridge OS has been updated (not to the latest version which I know can cause issues).
