[Unboxing] OMEN by HP Accelerator Thunderbolt 3 eGPU Enclosure
When HP announced the OMEN Accelerator, I was very excited to see the product in person. I finally got one this past weekend. Here are some photos of the unboxing and first impression.
The retail box is huge. It looks and feels like a small PC Desktop packaging.
The OMEN Accelerator enclosure is wrapped up in a nice cloth bag with plenty of foam paddings. The legs are well-protected with extra bubble wraps.
Towards the rear and on the side is the lever to open the case. It’s plastic and feels a bit wonky to operate. The 2.5″ drive mounting plate is very sturdy though.
Unlike the OMEN X desktop, tilting the box at an angle doesn’t help with internal component access when the box is smaller than a regular PC case. I used the padding to rest the top cover and enclosure so that I could install a SSD and GPU.
There’s a film covering the PCIe rear opening. Peel it off in order to install a GPU. I definitely don’t like the design of the GPU securing screw. The PSU is actually an ATX unit. It sits on top of the Thunderbolt 3 board and covers 80% of it; this arrangement only exposes the 24-pin power connector and PCIe slot.
This eGPU enclosure has the largest footprint atm. The PSU size was chosen to keep cost down in order to achieve $299 price point for a full feature external GPU box. Testings and a full review of the OMEN Accelerator are under way. Please let me know if I left out any information you’d like to know.
The mood light module is mounted at the top near the front fascia. I have not located the connector on the main board but it’s easily disabled. Same with the light for the voodoo logo in the front. Any recommendations to test FPS while SSD is in use?
Oh man, this is pretty neat to see! It looks like the Omen Accelerator caters to a different set of needs than the Aorus Gaming Box - I'm curious to see if the extra features were worth the massive size.
Question: can the Enclosure be stood up on it's side to reduce the footprint, or is it not stable enough to do that?

Try a 1st/3rd person perspective seam-less open-world game that dynamically load content without normally showing any loading screens (or placeholder scenes). Witcher 3 comes to mind here, but it might not be taxing enough on modern GPUs 🙂
I know that on ULTRA, loading causes minor hiccups on Aorus without H2D fix.
Of course, my SSD was internal (PCIe x4, too), but given the fact that a full TB3 link can saturate the entire DMI... I'm pretty sure my results would match up.
...or run some torrents off of the SSD while gaming 😀
Guys, I have an odd question: can anyone provide me with the retail card-box measures? The one HP ships it in. If you didn't throw it away already, that is. It's critical information to me.
Thanks in advance!
