[Unboxing] Razer Core X Chroma Thunderbolt 3 External GPU Enclosure
I contacted Razer's support before I saw itsage's update. They didn't know what controller would be used and said they were waiting on an update from headquarters. Makes me wonder if they will eventually use titan ridge, but decided to use up their stock of alpine ridge controllers first?
Me (4/19/2019, 1:29:47 PM): I have seen multiple reports saying that the new Core X Chroma uses two of intel's Titan Ridge thunderbolt 3 controllers, but I can't find any details on your website. I just want to know if the Core X Chroma uses Titan Ridge or Alpine Ridge controllers.
System Support (4/19/2019, 1:30:16 PM): I understand on that. Thanks for sharing that one.
System Support (4/19/2019, 1:30:58 PM): We are still working on that to be posted on our website.
System Support (4/19/2019, 1:33:24 PM): By theory Core X chroma will work on Titan ridge and Alpine ridge.
System Support (4/19/2019, 1:33:57 PM): The specs that the ridges have matches the core X.
System Support (4/19/2019, 1:34:11 PM): Is there anything else I can help you with?
Me (4/19/2019, 1:34:34 PM): I'm sorry. I'm confused.
Me (4/19/2019, 1:35:21 PM): Are you saying you don't know which controllers will be inside of the Chroma model?
System Support (4/19/2019, 1:37:10 PM): The thing is we are still waiting for updates from our headquarters.
System Support (4/19/2019, 1:38:38 PM): I will raise this concern to our headquarters so I can provide you the exact answer.
Me (4/19/2019, 1:38:52 PM): Ok. Thank you.
@joi_kansai The funny thing is it might have come from me. Hahaha...
I was out of town when Razer emailed me about this new Razer Core X Chroma (April 15th). I glanced through the announcement PDF and saw the new changes (RGB, 700W PSU, and dual TB3). I got excited and emailed them back asking if the controllers are Titan Ridge. They said yes and I got even more excited.
They might have fed that to other websites who don't really dig into the details go eGPU enclosures. I should have waited until my sample arrived before saying anything. The excitement got the better of me. Realistically Titan Ridge controllers don't provide any performance advantage over Alpine Ridge ones. Blackmagic eGPUs are the only one that use them. They need Titan Ridge to feed two DisplayPort streams into the TB3 controllers for Thunderbolt 3 monitor output.
meh decided to hold onto the chroma despite the titan ridge PR fail. Tb3 connectivity instead of displayport would've been cool if I wanted to take it anywhere, but oh well. Using displayport directly to the monitor anyways, and would've probably been fine with the regular Core X but the 700w PSU is appealing for my uses.
Mounted right up underneath the right side of my standing desk build (still a work in progress) using a CPU holder. Little bit wider then the Akitio Node it just replaced. First time using one of Razer's eGPU boxes, the handle -> slide out is wonderfully designed. The less screws I have to fuss with the merrier, some of the screws in the Node were obnoxious.
Pretty much plug and play as expected.

That's a beautiful set up @anchoricex. Could you please let me know the brand of your under desk CPU holder and where I can buy it online?
Thanks for the awesome unboxing?
I personally fell in love with the PowerColor Gaming station for the additional ports and the option to add an SSD within the enclosure. It was unfortunate that I ran into a HUGE issue with the USB ports spazzing out and randomly disconnecting. I understand that the dual controllers is supposed to alleviate that issue. Does the Razer Core X Chroma have a SATA connection & plug via power supply for an internal SSD?
@itsage thanks for the unboxing, also damn it doesn’t use titan ridge? Not that it really matters for an egpu but maybe there’ll be more firmware support for titan ridge in the future.
mine has arrived about 4 days ago at home, while I’m travelling for work - I saw in a post above that it works properly with the Radeon vii? Fans warts and all?
if not, I might be inclined to get the wife to ship it back to Razer SG while it’s still within the return window.
edit: looking forward to your review!
@kelvin_tan I received more insight regarding the use of Titan Ridge controllers on eGPU enclosures. At the moment the Blackmagic units have them because they are certified for macOS only. Intel doesn't certify Titan Ridge TB3 controllers for both macOS and Windows 10. For the vendors it's clear going with both macOS & Windows certification is better than Titan Ridge.
I installed the RX Vega 64 LC in the Razer Core X Chroma today and discovered a nice surprise. Razer revised the cooling fan bracket so that we can mount a radiator without modifications. I re-routed the power cables to ensure good clearance when everything is installed.
You'd only need mounting screws for the radiator. I had some spare ones from the OMEN X desktop.
