@wildfear, Interesting! Presumably it is because of the newer Thunderbolt 3 JHL7440 controller.

My Akitio Node Titan just arrived and I am keen to see if there is any difference in performance between it, my Aorus Gaming Box and the Chinese Domestic Market eGPU I also have to test. I just need my new GPU to arrive so I can actually test them.

~US$150 JEYI Thunderbolt 3 Dock has similar features to the WD_Black D50 Game Dock at half it's price

@Boltoway, @wildfear, the ~US$150 JEYI Thunderbolt 3 Dock also uses a JHL7440 and has a M.2 NVMe slot. It has a lower 60W+15W PD, smaller profile than WD_Black D50 Game Dock which also means a lesser port selection. It's halved price may be attractive for some users.

@wildfear, Nice to see you're seeing improvements in tests with this WD_Black D50 TB3 dock. Did your unit come with the NVMe M.2 mounting screw? Mine didn't have the screw or the base. I'm trying to find an appropriate set to use.

@nando4, I recall seeing a build using the JEYI Thunderbolt 3 Dock. I'm not sure about the max throughput. Do you recall?

@itsage, there was some talk about the JEYI Thunderdock 7 mini at https://egpu.io/forums/thunderbolt-enclosures/r43sl-r43sf-thunderdock-g7-mini/paged/2/. That TB3 dock seemingly disappeared off the market, replaced by the pricier JEYI Thunderbolt 3 Dock. I don't recall seeing any AIDA64/CUDA-Z bandwidth tests with either. Though we might infer performance matches a Cooler Master MasterCase EG200. As you wrote:

@fndg, Sorry to hear you're struggling with this setup. The fan controller arrangement looks very janky imo. The interesting component is the Thunderbolt 3 JHL7440 controller board. I recently saw the same component in the Cooler Master MasterCase EG200 eGPU enclosure.

@nando4, Thank you for finding that discussion. I now remember JHL7440 controller to have a higher throughput. If we base off the AIDA64 GPGPU numbers of the WD_Black D50 and MasterCase EG200, the JEYI Thunderbolt 3 Dock should be as capable.

When I was searching for PD options to use M.2 eGPU adapter, the JEYI Thunderbolt 3 Dock was in mind but shipping was more than a month out. Seagate Firecuda Gaming Dock was another intriguing option with both SATA drive and M.2 slot, but no PD. Reading some feedbacks seem to indicate the Thunderbolt 3 throughput of that unit is not as good and NVMe drive may be capped.

No screw with the dock but it was an Amazon warehouse unit so not sure I got the full package (TB3 cable was missing).

I used a screw from ADT_link kit 😉

Regarding the Goshen Ridge discussion on the previous page, Sonnet made a video about it. This was linked at https://egpu.io/forums/thunderbolt-enclosures/new-egpu-enclosures-from-sonnet-750-and-750ex/#post-95533

@joevt

I have seen Sonnet's video previously and it is an excellent explanation of the differences between Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4.

I am interested to see how the Lenovo Thunderbolt 4 dock performs with an eGPU in a daisy chain. It uses the JHL8440 Controller and has a single Thunderbolt downstream port, which according to Sonnet's video can support the passthrough of 4 lanes of PCIe.
