I'm looking into getting an eGPU setup since I work in software development and I run a lot of screens at once, and my setup gets warm.
I have a MacBook with the following specs:
- MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)
- 2.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
- 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
- Radeon Pro 455 2 GB
- Intel HD Graphics 530 1536 MB
My usual setup is two external monitors (1080p) connected with Tb3/USB-C, running several Chrome tabs, one or two IDEs/text editors, Slack and/or Discord, and a mini window for YouTube. I usually don't game on my Mac, but sometimes I will use it as a streaming station via capture card.
Would an eGPU help in this kind of setup? I think it would off load some of the processing power from multiple monitors, and may help with video rendering, but would it be worth the investment?
To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.
.@judson_james An eGPU can definitely take the load off your MacBook Pro's dGPU. A good choice for your use is the RX 580 Gaming Box.
