Boot errors with NVIDIA eGPU

All, I'm having a heckuva time after switching to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. I'm running a Rzer Blade Stealth (2016) with CoreX/Nvidia 1050 over Thunderbolt. Nvidia 396 drivers

During boot, I get a message

snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdsudioC100; Unable to sync register 0x4f0800, -5

thunderbolt 0000:04:00.0; failed to find route string for switch at 1.1

I have had this error before and was successful at booting after 20+ tries. Now it seems I am completely locked out. Any tips on how I can troubleshoot and fix?

EDIT: Got it booted after this, but still no eGPU support. Just a login screen that goes black on the laptop :

I created a file /etc/modprobe.d/intel.conf and added the following:

options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
