eGPU authorized, but no GPU

I finally got Ubuntu 20.04 running on my MacBook Pro 16. Thunderbolt seems to work just fine for everything (docks and drives). When I attach my Razer Core + RTX 2080 Ti, the eGPU is recognized and authorized, but the GPU isn't recognized. The Ubuntu additional drivers thing knows there's an nvidia card and I can install the 440 drivers. However, no GPU. Nvidia-SMI says there's no drivers and communicate. Output of lspci shows the RTX2080Ti is attached. I tried logging out and logging back in, but no joy.

Any ideas? I feel like I'm so close!

Did you find anything?

I have approximately the same installation : MacBook Pro 2017 13", Razer Core X, Nvidia Rtx 2080 Ti and Ubuntu 18.04.

I have installed all drivers, the eGPU on Thunderbolt ports is recognized but nvidia-smi returns "NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running."

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

I was running into this same error until I added some additional kernel parameters. Take a look at my build thread that has the ones I am using that got it all working on multiple different laptops.

So I'm having the exact same issue and I just tried running through Logan's build thread, but nvidia-smi still couldn't pick up the gpu. If any of you figure it out, please update!

Hi guys, I am also running a T2 enabled MacBook. I found that my issue was that the kernel incorrectly allocated memory to the eGPU. I found that after passing these kernel parameters described here I got my setup working. I am with team red though so I am not sure with your guys' NVidia cards, worth a shot. https://egpu.io/forums/thunderbolt-linux-setup/tutorial-ubuntu-18-04-rtx-2080-razer-core-v1/#post-76425
