Hi all,

My first post here. I just ordered a new Macbook Air 2018 (512GB, 16GB memory).
Has anyone tried the new Macbook Air with an eGPU? I couldn't find any benchmarks or reviews online so far. I hope it is capable despite the Y intel processor.

And which is the most quiet eGPU you recommend? (..that is not Blackmagic so I can actually decide which GPU I want inside). I wish there were db/loudness metrics on the eGPU.io guide, this would help a lot.

Thanks!
Daniel

The ASUS XG Station Pro when paired with a GPU that has silent mode would be very quiet. During idle and light load, there's no fan running so the eGPU effectively produces 0dB. Its weakness is limited power delivery. However in your setup, the 15W PD might be sufficient for the Y CPU. It would be fun to confirm whether it prevents battery drainage during use.

It's not possible to include accurate acoustic performance for all enclosure reviewed. Environment is a factor. The installed GPU is another. The only one with published noise level so far is Blackmagic eGPU. They built eGFX from scratch and had full control. Most eGFXs with built-in GPUs don't have this information because they are likely not favorable. Blackmagic didn't disclose the noise level its Vega 56 variant as an example.

I think there are noise tests on most the recent reviews... long story short the Asus XG Station Pro is the quietest from what I have read.

GTX1070 + Sonnet Breakaway Box + Win10
GTX1070 + Razer Core V1 + Win10

I had three encolusres for Test, Aorus Gaming Box 1080, Asus XG Station Pro and Razer Core X and the Asus is the most quiet by far, Razer Core X coming on second place and Aorus Gaming Box being the loudest. Of course you need a quiet GPU, too. In my case, it is very quiet, but also very expensive. (EVGA GTX1080Ti Sc2). Don't ever expect to get that one cheap.

Agree, but there’s also cheaper evga model black 2070 with also quite stoppable fans, with raw performance around 1080 and better in some dx12 games that has Ray Tracing core and dlss feature for €521 from evga.de, US i think $499.
