@mac_editor @precision01 new beta 10.15.2 (19C39d) new value:

Schermata 2019 11 14 alle 20.29.04

!BE CAREFUL WITH THE UPDATE!

This release is very unstable for my setup. I got 3 time green screen during Valley Benchmark, it never happened before.  Very unstable (and worst) performance too. This is my (only) Valley Benchmark that I made.

Schermata 2019 11 14 alle 20.53.50

Hello, @mac_editor , @jefniro , @itsage

After doing a lot of tests, including, Geekbench, Luxmark, Valley, Heaven and Steam Games that work both on Mac and Windows, I came to some conclusions, which I'm going to list here.

note1. In general, Nothing changed between tests on macOS 10.15.0 ~ 10.15.2 beta 1.

note2. The tested system was a MacBook Pro 15" 2019 - Core i9 - 16gb Ram - Razer Core X + XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT (reference card)

note3. As expected, my MacBook Air 2019 results are slower but still proportional to Macbook Pro 15 results. And I have the same geekbench issues with it.

1. Geekbench 5.0.4

- The app is not reliable at all. At least on my system. After dozens of runs, with shorter or longer thunderbolt 3 cables, my OpenCL score randomly varied from 30.000 to 42.000. And Metal score randomly varied between 28.000 and 32.000.

- On macOS, I never got even near the 60's that I can see on geekbench online browser or from some people benchmarks here. Incan get those 60s score just on Windows 10.

- Shorter TB3 cable gave me the highest results.

- Win 10 results are on par with what other people achieved.

GeekbenchOpenCL B
GeekbenchMetal A

2. Valley / Heaven

- The app results are stable.

- Nothing changes when using shorter or longer cable.

- macOS results average 20% slower than on Windows.

Win unigineValley
Mac unigineValley

3. Luxmark

- The app results are stable.

- Nothing changes when using shorter or longer cable.

- Results seem very stable and close to other people scores.

LuxmarkOpenCL A

4. Rise of Tomb Raider - 2016(PC) 2018(mac)

- The app results are stable.

- Nothing changes when using shorter or longer cable.

- macOS 1440p and 2160p results average 20% slower scores than on Windows

5. Shadow of Tomb Raider - 2018(PC) 2019(Mac)

- The app results are stable.

- Nothing changes when using shorter or longer cable.

- macOS 1440p and 2160p results average ONLY 7% slower than on Windows (Did not expect this)

Win shadowTombRaider2160pHigh Cabo Thunder CurtoB
Mac shadowTombRaider2160pHigh Cabo Thunder Curto

My conclusion about gaming performance on Mac with the newer cards:

There's still some room for the Navi drivers to mature, but performance is already good on Metal api optimized games.

It seems that Metal optimized games on Mac can perform closer to DirectX 12 and Vulkan api games on Windows 10.

So, with some effort from AMD, Apple and developers, Mac gaming can be decent.

An optimized game like Shadow of Tomb Raider clearly shows that.

@kushnyc

I will be interesting to compare the Radeon RX 5500M dGPU performance with Radeon RX 5700 XT eGPU performance.

For valley in Windows test with OpenGL for more accurate comparison with macOS. DirectX outperforms OpenGL anyway.

Has anyone used the ASRock Challenger 5700XT? I can’t find much information about it, but it is currently much cheaper than the Gigabyte 5700 CT OC or Sapphire Pulse that I’ve been waiting for... but the low price makes me a bit nervous. Might be worth waiting for the Sapphire or Gigabyte?

Can someone help evaluate these benchmark scores as they seem low? No other devices were connected to the eGPU.

Sorry! Just wondering if you could explain in simple steps on how to do this kext injection to allow overclocking on real Mac? Did not know its actually possible on a Mac to overclock.  Happy with links to read up if you are not able to post steps here.

I am using a i7 Quadcore MacMini 16GB Ram, 1TB SSD Sonnet 550 with RX470 8GB.

The Mini is limited to 10.13.6. I am using the pw-script in order to get this setup to work.

I think if I had chosen a RX580 I did not have to use the script at all, because it will be supported. Is that true?

If I use that pw-script  is it possible tu use later gfx-cards with later drivers than the 10.13.6 supports?

It seems that this should be possible...can someone confirm this please?

Your Geekbench Open CL score pretty much matches the other RX 5700 XT scores charted on Geekbench's site.

Your score in the Unigine Heaven Open GL test looks fine as well.
