@user99999

Could you please create an IOReg Dump for me using IOJones while your eGPU is connected? I will try building an injector kext for you.

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

Is anyone running a PowerColor Red Dragon 5700 XT in a Sonnet eGFX 350W eGPU?

Any power related issues to be aware of? Or am I absolutely going to have to upgrade the PSU to a Corsair SF600 or 750?

Also, how is noise with this config?

Thanks.

I just installed MacOS 10.15.2, drivers are more stable now and benchmark results are the same that I had with the version 10.15.1 (67.6)

Going to answer my own question in case it helps others... 😀

I went ahead with this and it worked out great. My $199 Sonnet eGFX 350W now runs a PowerColor Red Dragon RX 5700 XT and it is absolutely silent with the Noctua NF-A12x25 ULN fan mod. The Akasa PSU it comes with is totally silent too and the GPU has a 0dB mode. Could not be happier.

Oh, and I have stress tested the hell out of this thing. When the GPU has the VBIOS switch set to 'Silent mode' rather than 'OC mode' the 350W PSU handles it without a problem (as predicted by itsage). I had an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1080 FE previously and the 5700 XT actually destroys it.
Have not tried 'OC mode' and probably won't bother.

I’m thinking about upgrading current RX580 to 5700/5700xt for the upcoming Christmas vacation. Below is the breakdown of my system:

2014 MBP 15.4”

Sonnet 350W with necessary TB3 to TB2 connectors and cables

Sapphire RX580

Mojave + Win 10 1803

The system did not give me any hard time even during Bootcamp windows setup. It just worked. I didn’t encounter any error 12.

However, on Sonnet’s website it clearly says at least Win 10 1809 build is needed to 5700 series. Has anyone tried with 1803 build with the vga card?

You do know that 1803 is no longer supported by Microsoft as of November 12, 2019, and consequently no longer gets security updates? Windows without security updates is quite the risk. If you go RX 5700 then I'd definitely stick with 1809 until it goes end of support in May 2020. Then we'll have to see if Microsoft/AMD have fixed code 12.

Thanks for replying to my post. I don't really care if 1803 is end of support or not as I only use Win 10 for gaming. All my personal info, banking...etc are done on my Mac OS.

So I picked up a 5700 today. It went way out of my surprise that I could just plug it in and it just worked on my Win 10 1803 just like my RX 580. The only thing I had to do is to uninstall the older adrenaline driver and install the latest one.

I did run some Valley benchmark under Win 10 but the results are perplexing. From my attached results you can see that there's no gain switching from RX580 to RX5700 on Valley benchmark @ 1080p, but @4K there's 75% performance boost.

I also verified the results in Rise of the Tomb Raider. The performance is undoubtedly better under 1080p so I think Valley has some problems.

Last question that I would like to ask is that is there anything I have to know before upgrading my MacOS from Mojave to Catalina? My current setup is quite stable and is working really well and I don't want Catalina to break anything. If I don't want to use the card under MacOS can I deactivate both Purge Wrangler and Purge nVidia?

I wouldn’t update to 10.15.2.

Some members here are reporting issues with eGPU support after updating. They seem quite annoyed.

Others say there are no performance gains compared to Mojave and 10.15.1.

I haven’t seen any pro-10.15.2 posts yet.

Hows everyone finding their Navi cards?

I'm tempted to give another a go after (I assume) my 5700xt failed, but wondering with the additional issues Window updates are throwing up if its wiser to switch back to Nvidia and just deal with never gaming in macOS (which is sub optimal anyway).

Still torn at the thought of upgrading from Mojave to Catalina.

My current Bootcamp is really working great and I’ve seen some posts on the forum that Catalina broke their Bootcamp. I really don’t have time playing with the installation of Windows as I just got a newborn to take care of.

Can anyone tell me usually what happens to Bootcamp Windows after a major Mac OS upgrade?
