Any reason not to buy the ASUS XG Station Pro?

Morning all.

Been lurking for awhile doing as much research as I can. I have a ThinkPad X1 Extreme on the way. This will serve as a desktop replacement. Currently using a PC I built myself with a 8700k and GTX 1080 (wife is getting it, upgrading her old Dell).

In looking at all the options for eGPU to pair with my new ThinkPad, the ASUS has appealed to me the most due to noise. I'm a huge fan of silent running builds. Also the plug and play sounds great. I don't mind not having any ports on it as I can just plug in another USB-C dongle with enough ports for my keyboard/mouse/headset.

Only hesitant on pulling the trigger because outside of here, there is very little in terms of reviews. Amazon and Newegg is very sparse with reviews. YouTube is just as bad.

If it helps, the bulk of the use will be to drive my monitor for normal PC work (excel/word/web browsing) and gaming. I do game a fair amount, roughly 20-30 hours a week. I do not expect to hit exact frames that I get now, however I game in 1080p/75hz so even a 20% loss should not be noticeable on the GTX 1080 for the foreseeable future.

Appreciate any advice!

The only negative I have against the XG Station Pro is 15W power delivery. You can't charge the laptop through the enclosure. Other than that it's one of the most quiet eGPU enclosures there is. In your case, you'd likely have to use the Lenovo original power adapter so power delivery may not be a big deal. Here are my recent builds using the XG Station Pro with 2018 Razer Blade 15 + RTX 2080 and 2018 15" MacBook Pro + GTX 1080 Ti.

Thanks, theitsage! I actually read your builds extensively. They were very well articulated. I'm not to worried about power delivery as I can easily use the original adapter. I went ahead and ordered it from Newegg, so we'll see how it goes!

Hi there;

Please let me know how the X1 Extreme is, and how well the Lenovo/Asus combo works out for you.  Both devices are currently on my short list.

This combination works perfectly for me, I have the top spec X1 Extreme and use both TB3 ports, 1 for the thinkpad doc and my general devices and one for the ASUS XG Station Pro with a 2080ti in it. Some messing around with drivers initially but is all good.

Don't mind the cable mess under the desk, still in testing phase 😀

I still need to proper benchmark, but I was getting 220 fps in Heaven Benchmark 1080p (external screen).
