The next Apple even has been announced, and the rumours are of two small laptops with ARM chips.

This is quite a biggie, both for Apple and more importantly (in my eyes, 😉 ) eGPU users so kicking off with this thread for a bit of speculation of where we will be once the dust settles.

There have been no talks about running other OS natively on Mac OS, bootcamp is not going to happen on ARM (but its not always needed to instal windows if there is a version of windows that will run ion ARM).

Big Navi support is likely but only rumoured...

Well, assuming that Windows ARM (with x86 emulation) is gonna take a while to hit the market, I would expect Apple to support Bootcamp with Windows ARM by the end of next year (probably when they release the 16 inch Macbook Pro ARM and kill Intel processors forever). All I know is that I'm buying the last x86 16-inches Macbook Pro and hold it for about 5 years haha.

Additional rumours suggest that all Mac laptops (16-inch too) would get Apple Silicon: "Apple and overseas suppliers are ramping up production of three new Mac laptops with Apple processors: new 13-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros and a new 13-inch MacBook Air, according to people familiar with the matter."

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-11-02/apple-to-hold-nov-10-event-to-announce-macs-with-own-chips

Personally I'm bit sceptical and I would be surprised if this is true for MacBook Pros. 🧐 On the other hand MacBook Air with ARM seems solid and logical start and would most likely make it once again the "ultimate" ultra-portable.

We well see...

I'd hope that 16-inch MacBook Pro would get one final x86 update with AMD 6000-series mobile chips (no yet revealed, but what Apple wouldn't get from AMD?)

--> because then we would get Big Navi drivers for macOS 😀

@gaerraty, that would be the dream!

I would be very surprised if they revealed a 16inch with ARM, I heard there were 3 Macs being shown but two laptops and an iMac. There have been zero leaks around new form factors though which is very rare and possibly a call for concern.

Both my Hack and my Macbook are playing up today which is getting me to the end of my tether, hopefully a suitable replacement will be revealed.

A 16 with an AMD GPU and ARM is slightly odd too as they have said they will be transitioning to their own GPUs too, but then I wonder if thats iGPU level only?

@eightarmedpet, I'm hoping there's at least one Intel MacBook Pro with the Tiger Lake processor and Thunderbolt 4. That will be a keeper for me until 2025.

@eightarmedpet

I do hope Apple's event includes a desktop to go along with the portables.

We know MBP sales drive Apple's Mac profits. Still, I would be excited to see an ARM Mac Mini and ARM iMac sometime soon as well.

I'm going to keep my Intel Mini + eGPU dedicated to rendering in Arnold and (soon) Octane X.

Everything else I do can easily be offloaded to a new ARM Mini with (much) more storage.

😀

@mini-i5, I would love an ARM Mac mini with a tiny battery and external power supply. It will run off a 100W USB-C adapter. For eGPU users, we can connect an eGPU and only need a single power source to Thunderbolt enclosure.

@itsage, that would be a nice little machine and with the ARM chips having both high performance and low power cores (I think?) it could switch between them depending on how much juice its getting.

There are a few Mac minis kicking about on the refurb store atm which I am doing my best to resist.

I'd love an ARM powered Mac mini in the AirPort Extreme form but Apple TV size.

@eightarmedpet, I think it's very possible to do a Mac mini with 100W. The current one uses a 150W PSU to feed the 60W Intel CPU and 4x 15W USB-C/TB3 ports. In terms of design, Apple has had more success with bottom intake to rear exhaust (current iMac and Mac mini). The cylindrical shape design such as the AirPort Extreme tends to use bottom intake to top exhaust (G4 Cube and 2013 Mac Pro). The Mac Pro towers use front to rear airflow so a 127mm/5in cube design with a front-mounted fan for the Mac mini would be amazing! The logicboard sits atop the base with a tall heatsink. Rear I/O ports run along the bottom with exhaust vents above them.

There’s an unverifiable story going around. Take it for what it’s worth.

Benchmarks for one of the new A14X 8-core based Macs (allegedly):

Geekbench CPU single core: 1634

Geekbench CPU multi core: 7220
