There really isn't any technical reason for Metal not to support more architectures than their own going forward that I can see.

Metal will support multiple architectures, it technically already does as it is on both macOS (Intel) and iOS (ARM). It's not a matter of API - just optimization. Having one type of architecture in your ecosystem is much better than multiple - that's the foundation of the iPhone/iPad/Watch success. Its easier for developers.

So Apple would have to force features that can't be emulated on dGPU's for them to be entirely incompatible. We'll have to see which way they go obviously, but to me it seems like Apple would be closing doors unnecessarily.

They won't be inoperable, its a matter of optimization that I would question from developer standpoint. Optimizing for both types of GPUs is additional work for developers. I don't think such arrangements exist too long with Apple. Having a streamlined architecture to build for is the main goal so unless Apple has done some myriad Xcode magic to make this possible (which I don't think given how rigorous the WWDC focus on optimizing for Apple GPUs was), I would err on the side of Apple "eventually" closing doors. It just makes sense to me from a developer perspective.

BUT, all of this depends on Apple being able to deliver on GPU performance. If they can't, then the door will/should stay open. If they can - my guess is "eventually" the doors might be closed. Of course this is just my 2c and should be taken with a grain of salt or less.

What I'm happy about is that we don't know haha - so the event will have surprises! Yay for once! Most exciting event of the year for me, alongside the good NVIDIA/AMD showings this year!

@eightarmedpet, pretty sure someone will eventually figure out how to natively boot Windows ARM on AS Macs :p

@mac_editor, sounds like you may know more on that subject than me (but to be honest thats not usually that hard to).

I'll defo be watching the vent and will try and be on Discord too if anyone cares to join.

@eightarmedpet, well I always think of it as more of an inevitability. Recently the T2 chip (root of trust for recent Macs) was jailbroken so if some people really desired, they could probably eventually find their way around AS Macs too. That's how it usually goes with security, and that's why Apple always attempts to shift the goalposts with their new chips and OSes.

@mac_editor, I agree with you on the developer burdened aspect. I can only hope that Apple does provide the tools necessary to lighten the burden. Especially considering they don't embrace others efforts in this regard (cries in MoltenVK). If not immediately, then down the line.

As a side note I do wonder if Apple won't engage with the gaming community somehow soon. Tomb Raider being showed off with Rosetta was frankly surprising to me. Thats the mystery of Apple though, one day they're for gaming, the other not. Heck, we might be hours away from the unveiling of TV+ for gamers aside the new hardware. You just never know with them.

Like many Mac users, I'm highly interested in this event. My biggest fear is a vertical integration like Apple has been implementing on iPhone/iPad and other hardware. I have no ground to argue on security and privacy. I simply do not want a soulless tool for a computer.

@itsage, I feel you. There’s so many questions we want answers to. This is a really big change to the Mac - irrespective of how it pans out (dGPUs/only Apple GPUs/etc.). Just about a couple hours away now.

Since Apple codeveloped Thunderbolt with Intel, I would be surprised if the new ARM macs didn’t offer Thunderbolt 4 expansion ports. Quite how well egpu’s would work with them, if at all, is something we will have to wait and see on.

New mini looks a bit odd. Less ports? The enclosure looked empty too in one shot.

looks a bit of a step back.
