CPU Bottleneck... time for an upgrade.
So, I always knew I'd be bottlenecking my GPU as I have a weak dual core U class CPU but I had a pal instal MSI Afterburner for me and OH BOY... CPU 100% while the GPU is at 50%.
Thats pretty drastic.
So I'm looking at upgrade paths, options so far...
- New MBP - 13 or 15? Prob 13, although maybe waiting until the next gen is revealed this year.
- Mac mini - Prob i5 version due to thermals being inadequate for i7
- Build a small gaming PC (not sure I really want 2 machines). Obvs best bang for buck, but my god PC's are ugly.
Anyone. with any thoughts? Or have experience with any of those set ups? The Mac mini is tempting due to price and maybe it won't be as much trouble setting up as last time.
I like this case and someone posted here with a sweet build already. to hold you over until next macbook pro
I wanted to recommend the 2018 Mac mini but at the same time I'm conflicted. The Apple T2 Chip really bothers me. Is moving away from macOS a possibility in your future?
I'm considering selling my enclosure and buying a desktop machine...it is slightly more expensive, but looks healthier for me and my laptop nowadays. About the space, unlike a PC, the enclosure is quite big and the short TB3 cable forces me to keep it near the laptop. The external display, mouse and keyboard can be shared...it's a trade-off, I'm a bit disappointed the new MBP 2019, it's powerful enough but doesn't get on well with my eGPU.
@sebastian_stawecki its odd your 2019 doesn't play well, I thought set up had only got easier over the years, my 2017 is currently super easy and consistent (famous last words!) but just lacking in CPU power.
@itsage I couldn't ever fully switch to W10 as I use Sketch app in my 9 to 5, another issue which I am sure PC guys will laugh at is aesthetics, I have never seen a PC case that looks anywhere near as nice as a Mac, and I'm including the Circle case, Ghost and Dan. I actually built quite a few Hackintoshes before getting into eGPUs (it was easier to get the parts in the TB2 days when eGPU's were mainly home made or that Russian company).
I really hope we see a 14 and 16 inch MBP this year, I don't think they can go back thinness wise but if the next gen CPU's run cooler it might help alleviate the thermal issues...
I agree aesthetics are indeed very important and it seems you have high standards (as you should). your ability to buy apple or make hackintosh means you can work with many popular components. Since you do not like the looks of above PC cases but apparently are considering PC components then why not use an old G5 or G4 tower and remake the interior? Or maybe list some designs or cases you do find attractive.
this site will help.
