Dell XPS 15 2020 with eGPU vs desktop
I'm considering buying a Dell XPS 15 ( i7-10875H) as my next laptop. Primarly for programming at uni and work (Android Studio etc.). I was wondering if anyone could tell me how an XPS 15 with eGPU would match up against my current desktop if I were to buy an eGPU enclosure and use that as my desktop replacement. The desktop I currently have has an i7-4770k and a GTX 1070. It was built in 2013 so it has 16gb DDR3 RAM.
If I were to upgrade my GPU to a RTX 2070 TI or something in that ballpark and use that as an eGPU, how would the performance compare to my current desktop?
With an eGPU I would use it for some gaming aswell. The most demanding games are Star Citizen and Warzone, where Warzone is getting > 60 frames most of the time at medium to high settings, and Star Citizen being all over the place due to the CPU heavy computations.
The resolution I would be gaming at is 3440x1440.
Taking the performance hit the GPU would take from being over TB3 into consideration, would the laptop be better than my desktop seeing it has better CPU and memory?
Is there any info about when can we actually buy a 3080 or 3070? Like if the they release in september, can you instantly order? I tried to google but very little information.
Also do you think a eGPU like 3070 or 3080 would run something like the upcoming cyberpunk 2077 on 4k 60 fps? I have iMac with i9 and want to add egpu. Should the 3080 and 3070 fit to the old eGPU enclosures like razer core x chroma?
@erik_skar, Hi there.
Check the builds section to find a build similar to what you are thinking of and check the benchmarks.
That is the only way to find out .
