[Egpu vs gaming laptop] How much of a performance can I realistically expect? (MBP 15 + EGPU vs Razer blade pro 17)

So here is my dilemma:

I have the 2016 MBP 15 (TB), I am thinking about getting a EGPU with RX 5700 XT

I wondering if anyone knows how much the aforementioned setup would out perform a Razer blade pro 17 (with 2080 Max Q)?

Or the RBP with 2080 still beats my MBP with RX 5700XT?

Any insight is welcomed!!

John

Mmm it would be quite close I would imagine, much easier on the blade. This is putting the MBP in Bootcamp right?

There are a few aspects to consider.  The RBP will likely perform a little stronger, but once you have it, that’s all you’re gonna have.  There’s no ability to future-proof, although it’ll would serve you well for several years.  The MBP with eGPU can get an upgraded external screen and GPU at any point so it would be pretty much future proof to a point.  There are also other options with non-gaming laptops with thunderbolt 3 that could support the eGPU as well.  The choice is yours, and there are a lot of different directions you could go.

Razer Core X
Sapphire Pulse RX 5700 XT Dual BIOS

For gaming, RBP 17 with GTX2080-MAXQ spanks the MBP + RX 5700 XT eGPU. See why TB3 underperforms for gaming at:

@nando4, wow really helpful link! Thank a lot man!

@andygev35, you are absolutely right, both have its pros and cons. I don't have an external monitor at this moment, so getting a gaming laptop which comes with a high refresh rate monitor sounds tempting Smile

@tsakal, thanks for the benchmark! that's some really good fps you are getting.
