Dear Forum

I love this forum and already learnt a lot here. Thanks for all the work done and help provided here!

I would love to receive some advice on which egpu enclosure and grafic card I should buy. My configuration:

- Macbook Pro Retina 15" 2012

- 16 GB ram, 2.3 Ghz cpu, thunderbold 1

- integrated Nvidia 650M graphic card

I would like to run better games under Windows 10 Bootcamp on my internal display (e.g. on 1280x800 resolution). E.g. Tomb Raider, Ori and the whisp, Divinity Original 2

My question: what combination of enclosure (small space/footprint and low noise levels are my main concern) and graphic card would you recommend?

Specifically: the build I currently most prefer would be Asus XG Station Pro and AMD RX580. I don't find any direct proof in the forum if this build would work on my above Macbook pro 15" 2012. Do you think it would?

Many thanks for your replies.

Tom

There are four builds using your MacBook, a TB3 enclosure and a AMD eGPU:

https://egpu.io/builds/?table_filter =">TB3 "15-inch MacBook Pro Retina" GT650M AMD"

eGPU Setup 1.35    •    eGPU Port Bandwidth Reference Table

2015 15" Dell Precision 7510 (Q M1000M) [6th,4C,H] + GTX 1080 Ti @32Gbps-M2 (ADT-Link R43SG) + Win10 1803 [build link]

@nando4,

Thank you for your reply. I know and researched all the builds before posting here but could not find any with the Asus XG Station Pro.

@nando4, addition: does this mean that other configurations than the above 4 suggested by you do not work?

It means other TB3 enclosures have been shown as working with your system. You can proceed with good confidence that an unlistedt TB3 enclosure such as your shortlisted ASUS XG Station Pro will work also.

eGPU Setup 1.35    •    eGPU Port Bandwidth Reference Table

2015 15" Dell Precision 7510 (Q M1000M) [6th,4C,H] + GTX 1080 Ti @32Gbps-M2 (ADT-Link R43SG) + Win10 1803 [build link]

@nando4,thanks a lot for your reply, Nando. I reviewed the builds you gave and it seems like the combination of my Macbook Pro Retina 2012 650m, Mojave & Win 10 Bootcamp should to be working with an eGPU under Mac OS and Win 10 as well.

May I ask 2 more questions?

I was not finding any reasonably priced Asus XG Pro Station and tend to go for a Sonnet Breakaway 550 instead. Do you think this will also work?

Another question: there are much more builds given, using older mac os versions with my Macbook. Do you think the situation has improved with Mojave?

Thank you very much, your help is  much appreciated.
