6K at 60 fps. That's the highest refresh rate for the Pro XDR display. Using the 5500M internal card, I get about 10 fps in Tomb Raider at 6K. If I can get it to at least 40 to 50, that would be playable.
@joevt That was a little over my head, but I'm trying to understand. So you're saying the W5700 Pro could handle the 6K? Also, what is DSC? And what eGPU enclosure do you suggest? And these expansion boxes are needed to go from DisplayPort to USB-C or something? Sorry if I sound like an idiot...pretty new to this stuff.
Display Stream Compression (DSC). Part of DisplayPort 1.4 spec.
The Apple Pro Display XDR has many connection modes that it can support.
HBR2 4K 10bpc
HBR3 5K (8bpc) (I don't think I've seen this work yet).
dual HBR2 (Thunderbolt only) 5K 10 bpc
HBR2 with DSC 6K 12 bpc
dual HBR3 (Thunderbolt only) 6K 10 bpc
The connection can be made using USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode (except where noted) or with Thunderbolt.
The Nvidia RTX cards and the AMD Navi cards support DSC (5700, 5700XT, W5700XT, W5700) so they all should support 6K. The RTX cards and the W5700 have a USB-C port that you can use with a normal USB-C cable. The connection will include USB to support the USB features of the display (USB ports, brightness control, presets?).
If you use a normal DisplayPort output, then you'll loose the USB features of the display, unless you use a method to combine USB with the DisplayPort output. I haven't seen anyone try those methods yet.
I don’t believe you can achieve that frame rate neither with a 2080ti or a 5700xt (which I own) but as looks you are a billionaire I would check the nVidia Titan series as already said. Another problem is the graphic library: old ones (OpenGL and DiirectX) mainly rely on processor power while the recents (Metal on Apple, DirectX12 on Win and Vulkan on all platforms) mainly rely on the GPU. If Tomb Rider relies on old graphic libraries... maybe (MAYBE!!!) a Titan us useless.
Is there a website that tells you which games use which graphics library? I just heard the news that Nvidia will be releasing their new graphics cards soon? I think I'll just wait till there is something a little more powerful. I waited about 3 years to finally buy this Mac and display. I'm gonna make sure the graphics card can handle this display.
