I want to install macos Mojave/Catalina but my gpu doesn’t support the software, so i was looking into buying a egpu because I do not want to take apart my iMac and I was wondering what the best egpu would be to get. Looking for cheapest but still good performance

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

@dp301, What software/task are you planning to use the eGPU for? Will you connect an external monitor to the eGPU?

@dp301, buying an eGPU doesn’t allow you to upgrade to higher (unsupported) versions of macOS.

1)
There are eGPU 3 builds that use the iMac 2011:
https://egpu.io/forums/builds/imac-21-5-inch-mid-2011-2-5ghz-with-amd-6750m-gtx-1050ti-sc-4gb-akitio-thunder2-macos-and-windows-10/

2)
There's a thread for upgrading the GPU but it's complicated so you don't want to go that way:

3)
You can install Catalina to unsupported Macs but it won't behave well with the original iMac 2011 dGPU?
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macos-10-15-catalina-on-unsupported-macs.2183772/

People have successfully combined #1 and #3.
I haven't seen anyone try combining #2 with #3. I think it should be possible but might take a lot of work? You'll probably have to disable the built-in display.

Mac mini (2018), Mac Pro (Early 2008), MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), GA-Z170X-Gaming 7, Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 8GB GDDR5, Sonnet Echo Express III-D, Trebleet Thunderbolt 3 to NVMe M.2 case
