Is the RX 5700 XT my best option?
I've been looking for a good eGPU setup to pair with my new Razer Blade Stealth Mercury Edition. My main focus is gaming with the best graphics at 60fps. My U3415W monitor does not support active syncing, so limiting frames to 60fps seems to be the best option. This is my first attempt at PC gaming, being a console gamer all my life, so I'm fine with 60fps for now.
Until now, I have been looking at pairing the Razer Core X or Core X Chroma with some form of an RTX 2080 Super. I have also contemplated pairing the Node Duo with a Zotac RTX 2070 Super Mini and use the other slot for an external SSD.
Today, my wife tried to install Davinci Resolve onto her aging 2013 MacBook Air, and has finally realized that she needs an upgrade. We are waiting on Apple to see what they will do with the smaller MacBook Pro this year, but it's safe to say her next computer will still be an Apple. She also mentioned being able to use my eGPU enclosure. I don't know enough about video editing, but it seems like an eGPU will give her a nice boost.
The research I've done leads me to believe the 2080 Super will not work with the latest MacBooks, and I have to start looking at Team Red.
Is the RX 5700 XT my best option for the best performance with gaming? Do you think macOS will eventually support Nvidia eGPU use? Should I wait on AMD to release a better GPU?
Radeon VII, RX 5700 XT, RX 5700 would all meet your requirements NOW. All depends on their cost and availability in new or s/h market. There are some RX 5700 models that can be flashed with RX 5700 XT VBIOS to increase clocks and get close to their bigger brother's performance. Worth considering.
