Looking for advice on an NUC / Mini Ryzen purchase
I own an HP Omen Accelerator and I am looking to buy a small NUC to keep in / on top of my tv cabinet.
Can't decide on whether I should get:
1. Intel NUC 10710u 10th gen + tb3 ~ $645 with delivery to me
2. Intel NUC i7-8559U 8th gen + tb3 ~$525 with delivery to me
3. Wait for a Ryzen 4700g APU mini pc with tb3 / build my own
I originally thought of doing #3, but I haven't seen any valid news on release dates and I kinda like the small factor and 3 year warranty for NUC's.
I might also use it as a re-encoding server when not in use, so figured #1 would give me best performance overall right now. The question is with that $120 price difference, is it really worth the upgrade from #2, specially with the egpu use?
@daclina, Cooling is a crucial factor when it comes to these NUC/ITX builds. I have been using a NUC7i5 with Zotac AMP Box mini + RX 580 [build link]. I have it connected to the TV too and it's been working great. I think the i7-10710U might be pushing it in this form factor.
@itsage, Thanks for the quick reply.
I have been trying to find some info on cooling and it seems the 10th gen might actually be the winner here.
- at 1:50 she says its the coolest NUC they've tested, because Intel has gotten better at cooling.
For reference, here's her review of the 8th gen.
Still undecided tbh.
@daclina, I believe the cooling system change took place when the NUC8 was released. I took my NUC7i5 apart once to apply new thermal paste and learn about its cooling system and the fan was tiny. It sits next to a heatsink to blow cool air through the rear vents.
NUC8 and NUC10 use a much larger cooling fan to take up nearly the entire surface of the mainboard. The heatsink sits underneath and vents are much more open. I was able to find some information on the cooling system. Here's the NUC8 review + photos vs NUC10 review + photos.
@itsage, Thanks for the links. Yes, I see the cooling setup looks very similar. I am currently looking to get the gen 8 as per your advice, more based on cost vs performance difference between the two, and should I use it for anything other than the egpu. Thanks for your help.
So if I understand correctly, there isn't any major difference in tb3 performance between the intel i7 gen 8 vs gen 10 cpus?
@daclina, The 10710u has more cores but no difference in Thunderbolt 3 connection. The 10th gen Ice Lake CPU, such as 1065G7 is better because of the on-die Thunderbolt 3 controller. I don't know if there's an option with that CPU for NUC.
