If I'm going to purchase the latest refresh of the 15 inch Mac Book Pro with vega 20 gpu, is there a point to getting an eGPU? Is there even an amd eGPU that performs better than the vega 20? I want to stay away from the nVidia eGPU's since they seem to limit you to pre Mojave.

Depends on lots of things...

  1. what apps pis are you using?
  2. what os?
  3. internal or external screen

There are rumours of a big MacBook refresh this autumn so might be worth holding out until then.

Vega 56 + Mantiz Venus + macOS + W10

So the GPU will be only used for games (light things like Wow, but I'm still a sucker for high quality so I like to crack the graphics up as high as I can get away with)
Want to be on the latest MacOS version
and I really only plan to use the internal screen to start off with. Maybe down the road I would use my external monitors.

Really another refresh? I thought that rumor was only about a 16 inch MBP which im not all that interested in. Would this be November?

Performance improvements aside, a desktop class graphics card is also essential because it won't thermal throttle like a mobile graphics chip can. If I didn't have an eGPU this week during this European heatwave I would have been screwed. I wouldn't have been able to meet my deadlines and this week was extremely busy for me. Even with the most powerful GPU available for me I was just about able to handle my workload. With the new Mac Pro I'll be completely comfortable.

Oh I meant line refresh as in 16 inch not specific model... but not a good time to buy.

If you’re gaming on macos and internal I’d say don’t bother with an eGPU, performance is terrible in all the games I’ve tested.

Windows on on the other hand is an entirely different matter...

I'll be gaming on the windows side. In that case, is the Radeon 580x worth it? Or is there a better amd eGPU that's not too much more expensive?

Is there any guesses as to when the new line will be revealed? And are there rumors of new 15 inch models?

Gaming on windows is a whole different kettle of fish.
A 580 (580x doesn’t exist) it a 5700 will do ya just fine. Or a Vega 56
Although if you are happy with your eGPU only working in windows Nvidia cards tend to be easier.

I got the 15 inch updated version with everything upgraded except the graphics card. I left that at the base and I intended to use the Radeon 7 (which was awesome for Mac gaming but didn’t work via bootcamp).

To date the internal GPU (base) is actually quite good. I can run most games on high settings and get 60fps. I’d go with an external though because the 7 just made everything amazing in comparison. And I’d rather tax and break an external card over the internal one cause everything is soldered to the board now.

Mac gaming seems to be limited though via the thunderbolt cable and the internals (I think it has to do with the T2 chip). Windows bootcamp is where you’ll see the biiiiiig results

So my final thoughts/questions are this:

If gaming in macOS is basically pointless, and I plan to game in windows, on the internal monitor. whats my best option? Should I get an nVidia or an AMD eGPU? Do they all have issues where you have to plug in the thunderbolt cable while windows is booting at the spinning circle screen? My ideal setup would be Vega20 for macOS, and an eGPU for windows to use on internal and sometimes external monitors.

Thoughts/Recommendations?

This isnt correct, the T2 has nowt to do with it and TB3 effects things equally in both OS, its down to how software handles eGPUs.

@fargate depends on expectations and budget.
