Hi,

I currently have a Dell XPS 15 9500 (2020), paired with a Razer Core X Chroma eGPU enclosure and Asus TUF RTX-3070 OC.

In the next few months I'm going to replace my XPS, and I'm looking for some advice.

The new laptop will most likely be the new XPS 15 9520 (2022) or the Surface Laptop Studio. I believe both have TB4, 4x PCIe lanes and a Nvidia dGPU. Which one would work best with my eGPU setup?

Or should I go for a Intel Xe iGPU laptop instead, like the XPS 13 Plus or (hopefully coming soon) Surface Laptop 5? I've had some issues with my current setup that I think could be related to having both a Nvidia dGPU and the Nvidia eGPU...

Thanks!

All Thunderbolt 4 laptops should have 4 x Lanes of PCIe for their respective Thunderbolt ports, and in this sense the only advantages you will see in terms of performance will likely be within the laptop itself, mostly in the way of thermal management, CPU and memory configuration, etc.

I wouldn't worry too much about having an internal NVIDIA GPU. While they can be annoying in terms of needing to be disabled, they are a good backup.

I would find a laptop that you prefer and has all the features you need.

Yeah, I've read that all TB4 laptops must have 4x lanes, so that's one less thing to worry about.

Which CPU would be a good match with my 3070 eGPU? A 12th gen i7? I guess a i9 would struggle with cooling unless it's a bigger 17" model.
Big difference in real world performance, 45W H CPUs (XPS 15, etc) vs 28W P CPUs (XPS 13 Plus, etc)? Let's say i7-12700H vs i7-1260P?
I'll stay away from the 9-15W U CPUs.

The Asus "GPU Tweak" software is really not made with eGPU in mind. It fails to properly identity the eGPU card, and will reset all its settings if it sees both Nvidia GPUs. So it's a pain to use because it needs constant manual attention. And both Windows and games will lag when both Nvidia GPUs are enabled at the same time.

Both the i7-12700H and i7-1260P are more than powerful enough to run anything, and most likely your bottleneck with the 3070 won't be the CPU but Thunderbolt itself. I don't think you would notice much real world difference between the two, however I am unsure of your exact usecase.

I would look into the scripts a couple of people have posted here that automates the disabling and enabling of the integrated GPU when an eGPU is attached, it might help smooth out your process.
