Hello guys,

I'd like to buy an egpu for casually play games at 1080p (or 1440p) in 60fps on my lg gram ultrabook (17inch). One primary factor for me would be the weight and the compact size. Another will be how silent it is. If I'm not dreaming too much, I'll also would like to have a few I/O on it (usb and ethernet).

After some research I didn't yet found the perfect match, it seems 4 good candidates are:

- Sonnet breakaway Puck rx 570 => ++ good compact size only 0.8kg, ++ I like the overall so small design -- but enormous power brick of 1.5kg! -- gpu not upgradable, in a few year rx 570 won't be good enough? -- no usb/ethernet I/O.

- PowerColor Mini rx570 => ++ good compact size (2kg), ++ perfect I/O for me (ethernet and few USB),  -- really big power brick, -- I also hear that it's pretty loud

- Aorus Gaming Box rx580 => ++ most powerful gpu -- compact size (2.3 kg total) and I/O Ok, but Idk I don't like a lot the design, the fact that the power suppply is inside the box, it seems pretty heavy to me and not perfect for travel.

- Zotac Box Mini + gtx 1060 3gb => ++ compact size (< 2.5kg), ++ good I/O, -- can't charge laptop as output power is 15w (vs 45w for my laptop charger). -- a bit less powerful gpu but ok for my usage maybe?

Another contestant:

- Lenovo tb3 graphic dock  => -- seems to don't have a powerful enough gpu. --saw some reviewers saying that it's loud.

Is it all the options I have currently? All these egpu are 1 to 3 years old. Nothing new on the market?

Or should I wait a bit to find new solutions?

One issue with some of these enclosures is the power brick which are too heavy,

do you think I could replace it later with a GaN power brick as they gain more popularity? (it will reduce by 2/2.5 the weight of the power brick)

Sorry for all the newbie questions. Thanks

Hey,

on this review video of the new PowerColor Mini pro rx 5700 , the egpu was too loud for the reviewer so he turned off the enclosure fan (by disconnecting it from the PCIe).

It was way more quieter as only the Mini Itx gpu fan was on. He said that he see no difference when fan are off and no issue.

Does it seem risky to you?

Hello guys,

do you think its possible to combine two 100w power bricks to power a 200w egpu enclosure?

if yes, how can we do it? sorry for the noob question!

My idea is to have a 2 very small usb-c power adapter which use GaN technology like this we can have a light solution for the power adapter. By example, the power brick of the Sonnet Puck Breakaway 570 weight more than 1.5kg / 3lb. By combining 2 small brick we can get below 0.5kg / 1lbs.

hyperjuice 100w power adapter weight only 200g / 0.46lb

For an upgradeable small enclosure, i think the Powercolor mini is a good option.

It's unwise to use two power supplies for a single component. Also the USB Power Delivery spec only allows 100W in the form of 20V at 5A, so you would need a buck converter to reduce the voltage, as well as a small circuit to negotiate the power delivery with the usb-c power adapter.

There are external 12v 180-200w external gan power supplies on the market but they are at $80-100.

Size wise the powercolor mini is nice.
Either with the 5700 if you can get hold of it at this moment or the previous one with an 570 card in it.

A gaming box is an option as the PSU is built in.

I’m running a vega nano in my powercolor mini with an external 460W server power supply, a DPS-460.
It have a fan but you can hear it. Not even when the vega is working hard as the vega fan is louder then the PSU fan.

@anis_souris

I can only provide you with my limited experience with the PowerColor Mini Pro 240FU attached to a Mac Mini 2018. I use it since about two weeks with the provided RX 570.

It fits perfectly to a Mac Mini 2018 in design, adaptability and portability. I consider this "team" as almost perfect for casually gaming. The portability of the eGPU itself, is great.

However, I perceive the sound of the back fan as annoying. Consequently, I switched it off permanently. So far I had no problems with the heat whilst using the enclosure under load. If this would change in future I would attach a switch for the rear fan for switching it on/off if required.

Wish you a happy hand with your decission. I am curious what option you will choose.

@username

May be in future I am going to ask you for advice concerning the use of the Mini Pro with a TB2 Mac Mini. My first try with my "old" Mac Mini 2014 and a TB2 adapter was not successful. It seems that the connection TB3 to TB2 can be a challenge. Hope you are not bothered if I ask.

Cheers

@hans-st.

I've not had time to write a installation guide/review of the Powercolor mini.

But the I followed the normal process.

1. Disable SIP. csrutil disable

2. Connected eGPU

3. Ran script - which of some reason stated I had a Thunderbolt2 port

4. Script found eGPU and Vega card.

5. Rebooted and login in with the use of HDMI connection as I have FileVault activated.

6. Everything worked.

7. Rebooted and enabled SIP: csrutil enable --without kext

8. Reboot and now I type password in the dark but that's ok 🙂

Edit: I used apples TB/TB2/TB3 adapter, TB2 cable, Powercolor TB3 cable and a 90 degree usb-c connector.

Ran script - which of some reason stated I had a Thunderbolt2 port

The 2012 Mac mini seems to report Thunderbolt 2 in IORegistry: https://github.com/mayankk2308/purge-wrangler/issues/5

It actually required the patch for Thunderbolt 2 devices vs. Thunderbolt 1. For macOS 10.15.1+, the patch is unified anyway.

Rebooted and enabled SIP: csrutil enable --without kext

While this works, script will not execute next time unless SIP is completely disabled: https://github.com/mayankk2308/purge-wrangler/issues/32

Yes I know.
When needed after an os/security update I disable it, patch/update and re-enable it again.
I’ve done this since the first script back in the days. 🙂

thanks for your feedbacks,

@hans-st : PowerColor mini + enclosure fan off seems to be the most powerful/portable/silent option now 🙂

Zotac Mini Box don't have an enclosure fan so I guess it make sense to turn it off on the PowerColor Mini Pro. But is there any chance that the board fries?

I travel only with a backpack so I guess I can drop a bit of performance to have something smaller 🙂 For now my thoughts are that I might not buy a portable solution yet, wait few months if there is a better solution, and go for now with a second hand enclosure for home (there is a cheap Zotac Amp Box mini and Mantiz Venus on my local Craiglist).

@jangoloti_1,  kfa2 SNPR seems good but I can't find a place to buy it!

2 year ago there was an offer: kfa2 SNPR egpu + gtx 1060 inside at 266euros (230$) on the french market. Was it a good offer?

Noob question: is it possible to have a Zotac Mini Box charge with a 100w power adapter? lets say you have a 70w or less gpu, as the zotac deliver only 15w max to laptop it will get to total 85w?

Also: you guys are expert on PSU alimentation, I'll be glad, if by any chance you have some resources to share about how the gpu / egpu enclosure drain power and how "wattage" works in general!

Cheers

@anis_souris,  the KFA2 has the 1060 integrated. It was sold in RueduCommerce, for instance, but I do not find it anymore.

Actually I do not think so. I just played under windows for 150min Civilisation 5 and the main fan turned very moderately and I did not notice it.

So far I faced no challenges with the heat.

Finally I got the time to prepare my Mac Mini 2014 as a back-up system in accordance with your guideline. It was an easy job for MacOS 10.15.3, thank you.

Did you ever try to get the PowerColor Mini Pro / Mac Mini 2012 system working with Windows?

This is a challenge for me. The eGPU is detected, the driver is installed, however an error 207 is indicated by the radeon installation program. It seems to me that the Win 10 / Intel TB / PowerColor Mini Pro / TB3->TB2 adapter system, installed on a Mac Mini 2014, does not work.

BTW, what is a TB3 bale?

I never got around to try windows.
I've never been into windows gaming or use.

A "bale" is the misspelled word "cable" 😀
