@donleavy

In Windows, try the AMD Adrenelin 20.4.2 drivers (not the latest drivers) with your 5700 XT.

Also, upgrade to Big Sur if you haven’t yet.

(No, Nvidia cards don’t work at all in Mac OS)

Hello! I’m new to all of this eGPU stuff and want to spend at most 350$. My specs are

  • i5-8250U @ 1.60Ghz
  • 8gb ddr4 ram
  • lenovo ideapad 330
  • model number: 81BG

It does have a USB-C 3.1 port. I currently only have the laptop screen(would I need a second monitor?) I only use this to play games so along as I can get atleast 30-60fps in most games (i.e Fortnite, destiny 2, modern warfare) that would be nice. If I have to sacrifice wifi I wouldn’t mind it, but I prefer if I didn’t(I own a wifi adapter)

Please let me know what is the cheapest gear I could go for and get decent graphics! Thanks!

You might take a look at following this build guide.

https://egpu.io/forums/builds/2019-15-lenovo-ideapad-330-ikb-mx130-7th2c4tu-gtx-1650-4gbps-m-2-ngff-beast-8-5c-win10-ivan_gojak/

But The simplest way to connect an eGPU to your laptop requires a Thunderbolt 3 connection.

Your budget isn't too far from retail price of the PS5 digital edition. So - good times.

Hi,

I have  Mid 2015 MacBook (with AMD M370X), Windows Bootcamp

eGPU: Lenovo BoostStation +  RTX 2060

Os: Catalina 10.15

Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter - genuine

I want to use my RTX in OSX but eGPU is not recognized in System rep.

Thunderbolt Port:

  Status: No device connected

  Link Status: 0x101

  Speed: Up to 20Gb/s x1

  Current Link Width: 0x1

  Receptacle: 1

  Link Controller Firmware Version: 0.15.0

  Port:

  Status: No device connected

  Link Status: 0x101

  Speed: Up to 20Gb/s x1

  Current Link Width: 0x1

  Receptacle: 2

  Link Controller Firmware Version: 0.15.0

I spend already 10h+ to make it work but still no luck...  I never saw a GPU fan spin! After power on my eGPU, I can hear the PSU fan, but GPU is quiet.

Hmmm, maybe read through this site’s Build guides for RTX 3090 setups and look for any mention of 8K results. (No, not 3060ti)

@mini-i5, thank you kindly sir.

Got the 3090, but when you said
"No, not 3060ti" - did you mean it cannot be done, or just there is no post about 3060ti?

Nvidia RTX cards don’t work in MacOS.

The older, simpler, Windows 1903 version 18362.295 comes highly recommended.

Also, Windows Bootcamp installations using Windows version 2004 20H2 combined with MacOS Big Sur have had some recent success on the 2018/2020 Mac Mini.

You might try that combo with your 2015 MBP

@davit_mrelashvili,

3060ti is pretty much intended for 1440p gaming. It would be surprising to find success stories at 8K.

@mini-i5, I meant as a PC monitor, not for gaming :))
