I upgraded from a 2070 Super FE to an EVGA 3090 XC3. As has been noted on these forums and on reddit, EVGA 30 series cards will run the fans at max speed if a sleeping or powered off laptop is connected via TB cable to the enclosure. It seems pretty clearly to be an EVGA bios (firmware) issue. I have reached out to support on two occasions. EVGA's response was: "we do not support eGPU configurations." In turn, I asked them where they say this anywhere on their website and if they could at least file a ticket with engineering--as a former firmware engineer, I would want to know if my code had a bug. In their final communication, they blew a bunch of smoke blown up my **  and refused to point me to any EVGA documents that said eGPUs were not supported. In short, it felt like they were telling me to go F*** myself. I was surprised since EVGA is highly regarded for having great customer support. Anyways, I just wanted to warn future buyers here. I know the availability of cards hampers selecting a preferred vendor. If this issue won't bother you, by all other regards the EVGA has been great. I use it for deep learning with TensorFlow on Ubuntu.

Somehow, I was able to get through Best Buy checkout with an ASUS 3090 TUF. If that card fixes the issue the EVGA is headed to eBay. As the eGPU enclosure is my primary source of power, it seems a ridiculous waste of energy to require my laptop be running in order to be charged without fans blaring.

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

Indeed, my new ASUS 3090 TUF solved the problem. Also, it has FAR superior thermal performance. At some point, I will try and post a build.
