What's a smart buy right now...

My Hack just crashed, in the middle of a conference call (it's ok, it was kinda boring), that, coupled with a few other minor imperfections makes me want to move back to a real Mac full time after my brief flirting with a dual boot.

I try and keep up with everything that's going on in the eGPU/tech world but would also appreciate peoples first hand experiences (often formed/evolved during real world usage after build guides are finished - which reminds me, need to post a couple of new ones, 1. Quiet RX580 mod and 2. test out direct powering of LG 5K as this issue has come up again).

I'm tempted to just grab a Mac mini again but dont think I can bring myself to buy an 8th gen CPU.

I have finally caved and ordered a new monitor with my 5K going up to the spare room as a "hot desk" for when my wife works, but the EVE monitor I have ordered (4K, 144 hz) has been delayed until Feb.

I'm now torn which way to go, if Apple made a more up to date Mac mini i'd be grabbing that.

Rumours are of a new 16inch this year (which is a short time frame now) and an Apple event next month (12th/14th ish), although I already have a 13inch MBP and dont find the larger ones very portable.

I dont really need much of a GPU in macOS so could go Nvidia for ease of set up in Windows for competitive FPS (although for all other games it would be nice to not to have to reboot).

I guess my ideal set up would be a single machine that does everything which is also very quiet, I got pretty close with my Hack but its not 100% rock solid, and I need that too.

Anyway, thats a lot of waffle, would love to hear some other peoples opinions of what's a smart purchase right now and how reliable they have found their individual set ups.

A mac Mini paired with an next gen 3070 level AMD card is tempting assuming we get macOS drivers.

The 16-in MacBook Pro is a very capable Mac laptop but its footprint is too bulky if you're used to the 13-in form factor. I hope we don't have another PowerBook G5 rumor but a 14-in MacBook Pro with Tiger Lake and Thunderbolt 4 ports would be an excellent sendoff.

We don't have many choices with Mac desktops either. For eGPU users, the iMac is not a good choice which is unfortunately because it's the best value. Even if you could justify the Mac Pro as a business expense, it is simply out of reach for many people.

The Mac mini is then the only reasonable choice. It has good Thunderbolt connection, relatively affordable, and easy enough to modify. You can make a clean build with eGPU + external monitor with a bit of extra cooling, or go all out with the modifications! It's a very fun machine in that regard.

P.S. RX 6800 XT drivers are tuned to compete with RTX 3080 from what I heard.

@itsage thanks for your input, your builds have always been great inspiration and those are some great examples!

And yeah, a 14inch MacBook with latest CPU would be the perfect machine for me but I fear if we do ever see one it will be with ARM and therefor sans Bootcamp (although I'm not 100% convinced that will be the death of Windows gaming on Macs).

I toyed with the idea of a Mac Pro, but the cost is just too high especially considering both the SSD and GPU would need instanced upgrades, plus I don't actually have the room for it, my current desk is a String system which is tiny.

A Mac mini doesn't really excite me, but it is the logical choice.

I guess next up is GPU, AMD or Nvidia, lets see what the Navi reveal err, reveals today...

Thanks again!

@eightarmedpet, I've had my real Mac crash in conference calls. Best to debug why your Hack crashed instead :p

With Apple Silicon Macs on the horizon, just hold off imo and see how things pan out with eGPU support + gaming on such Macs. I'd stay with the Hack at this time. If its too unstable, consider running it virtually (macOS-simple-kvm) with hardware passthrough(s). But all this is work - not the 'it just works' formula (arguably, Apple stuff don't always "just work" these days).

Navi 2x seems to be quite a nice release, so good GPU options going into 2021.

Btw got the LG27GN950-B (4K 144Hz) today. Think it has same/similar panel as the Eve you reserved. Love it so far.
