Following the release of COVID-19 Coronavirus Protease structure by the Worldwide Protein Data Bank Foundation, [email protected] and [email protected] are joining researchers to combat this new pathogen. While many of us can’t be actively involved, our community has plenty of computing power to lend a hand. Through distributed computing, we can put our idling computers to work.
I currently have several computers (including eGPU setups) running [email protected] and [email protected] Please visit this link to download [email protected] Once the installation completes, your computer can start contributing anonymously. March 12th Update: [email protected] provided an update with the project numbers and what they do. Also to note is that they are GPU optimized so using our eGPUs for these projects is an excellent match. It would be great to know how we can configure our systems to specifically work on them. Here’s a quick summary:

Thanks for bringing this up itsage, it is good work that eGPUs can do. I’ve been running [email protected] on my egpu for a couple of months now. No issues with slowdowns or overheating as almost all the work is done by the gpu outside the laptop. Unfortunately there isn’t a GPU macOS client, but windows bootcamp or Linux can be made to use the egpu.
@nu_ninja, That’s great to hear your eGPU can run [email protected] without issues! Can you share the details on setting up for Linux?
My eGPU for it..
Configure -> Slots -> gpu -> Edit -> gpu-index “0”
You need to set “Full” or “Medium” Folding Power, otherwise the GPU will seems idle… @itsage it would be fine to register the ID for egpu.io team!
@jefniro, That’s an excellent idea! Thank you for sharing the screen cap and I will see if we can create eGPU.io team and have more members join force!
Update: I created a team for our community. The team number is 235996.
Joined! 😀
@itsage, Thanks for sharing! Amazed at myself for not knowing about this already. Have enlisted my PC and Mac to blast away at both. Am using the team ID for [email protected]
@mac_editor, Same here. Setting the eGPU to run full blast for [email protected] has little to no negative effect in terms of using the computer for other daily tasks. After all these years, we may have found the perfect application to justify eGPU existence!
Bookmarked and sharing your page and team number across the internet. Hope it helps 🙂
Hello to all,
I run FoldingAtHome, it’s work. But I will compute Covid tasks. How can I set Project 11737 (or similar to Covid) ?
I try set team number 235996 or 2359960, but allways start with different projects, actually: 14314. 14314 seems not be a Covid project.
Can somebody help me to set my FAH client to compute Covid projects ?

@xkendy Kendy, same behavior! I paused it because is not clear which project you are helping…. unfortunately it seems that the client is very limited!

@itsage, Yeah, I wanted to specifically contribute to COVID-19 research first. I don’t mind lending compute for other projects of course, but the former was a motivation.
Here’s a relevant thread from the folding forum, looks like there’s no automated option to get only CoVID-19 work units, but GPUs should get mostly only those jobs since that’s what they’re pushing.
https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=106&t=32267&p=312083&hilit=set+cause#p312083
If you get a non-CoVID project (as seen by having a different project number from the ones itsage posted) you can try just removing that slot and re-adding it to get assigned a different project.
@nu_ninja, it’s very difficult to get one of them… 🙁 It gives to me only projects 11748 and 11751…
Got it! 🙂
@jefniro, I think also projects 11748 and 11751 are COVID-19-related, see links 😉 Italian here joining the eGPU team. After one week stuck at home with the country in complete lockdown, putting my GTX1070 to good use was the least I could do 🙂 Yesterday the servers were pretty overloaded but today I finally got my first Work Unit. Oh and guys, don’t forget: with [email protected] we can speed up research, but on the other hand let’s also buy it as much time as possible! Wherever you are, as COVID-19 spreads through your country, try to limit movement to the… Read more »
I woke up to my machines not doing any work. It seems many people are getting on board and the FAH servers cannot keep up with distributing out new work. 😀
The Alienware 13R3 with 3x Radeon eGPU is excellent for this use. At one point, they were going full speed and posted 2,293,210 points per day!
@itsage, it’s amazing!!! Cool!!!
Just joined the team yesterday, though I’ve been running it for the last week. Apart from the occasional idle, my system’s been okay. Does anyone else have “bad gateway” issues when looking at the [email protected] site?
@rlmontez, FAH servers have been overloaded the past week. I’m having a hard time pulling up the stats page. It’s not a bad problem because many people and jumping on board.
@BlackJack84 Our souls will fight it, our technology will beat it!! 😉
We reach 470 Peta Flops. That’s more than twice the 149 petaflops of the best supercomputer in the World!!
Now flying past ~768 PFLOPS, i.e. faster than the top 103 supercomputers combined.

So here’s a message to the demogorgon:
We are not locked in here with you.
YOU are locked in here with us.
@BlackJack84, WOW!!!! That’s incredible!! Really incredible! The message is brilliant! 😀
My problem with [email protected] was the noise of my eGPU. Now I use MSI Afterburner in order to limit the power usage, so I can give my contribution and keep my hears safe!
I installed both Radeon VII cards into my X399 desktop and it has serious compute power. Usually there’s only one job given in the past week. When both cards are assigned jobs however, they can produce nearly 4 million points per day. It’s very loud when both GPUs are running. 😀
New projects added:
Projects 14530-14590
Cause: covid
CORONAVIRUS PROJECT
Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 causing virus) protease – potential drug target
These are high-priority **CPU** projects to simulate the main protease of the COVID-19. At the time of release, this is the latest news report: https://foldingathome.org/2020/03/10/covid19-update/

Hi @itsage and thanks for sharing
my client is not seeing my egpu which is otherwise working fine for the system, any suggestions here?
@_photoguy_, Are you running FAH in macOS or Windows? I haven’t found a good way to set eGPU for FAH tasks in macOS. Therefore I have only been using Windows for folding.
Anyone else have problems with the [email protected] client detecting a different card than what they actually have connected? My [email protected] client says i have connected a HD 8950 but in fact it’s a RX 580 connected på my iMac via TB2.
@Rasmus Johansson, Does your iMac have a dGPU? It’s likely FAH recognized the dGPU only and identified it as such.
Been running [email protected] nightly with the RTX 2080 attached to my MacBook Pro, and the Radeon VII attached to my mini-itx PC. I’ve found the client gets confused if the GPU changes due to egpu hot plugging, and it wasn’t happy about my RVII being disabled when I use it on the MacBook in bootcamp for its usb peripherals, so I hot unplug the Core v2 before I turn folding on, and pop it into the Ryzen PC. I’ve also found that if its not working uninstalling and reinstalling can help, and doesn’t take too long. Originally I was using… Read more »
@Ningauble77 Running right behind you with Intel NUC i3 & 2070 GTX gaming box (underclocked to 125W). Whole combo is taking 150W and giving 1.2M PPD, pretty good 🙂
As of yesterday, these are the updated [email protected] FLOPS stats:
In other words, it now boasts almost 50% more computational power than the whole TOP500 list. 😯
This is unreal, keep them going folks!
OK, newbie here. I have been running BOINC for many months, but recently switched from SETI to Rosetta. I Googled and found the eGPU.io team and joined. The thing is … I don’t actually have an eGPU. I’m processing on a Dell laptop and getting maybe a few hundred credits per day. (Every bit helps, right?) What’s an inexpensive upgrade path to be able to help more? My laptop is a Dell Latitude E6430.
If you have a link to this info, I’d appreciate it.
