Q: What do the eGPU port acronyms like 32Gbps-TB3 mean and what are their ranked & measured peak H2D/write bandwidths?

System specs

  • 14 inch screen
  • 1185g7
  • intel iris xe96eu
  • windows

eGPU hardware

  • Aorus gaming box - 1070 version  - modified with 12V jumper cable to pin 1 to accomodate the card (see multiple DIY forum posts)
  • Zotac GTX 1660 Super
  • AOC ultrawide 29 inch

Installation steps

Take a 10 inch piece of 22 AWG solid core primary wire, stick one end on 12V power at 8 pin connector (the square one on the corner).

Stick the other end in pin number 1 on the pcie slot (left most, side close to the opening).

This permits the eGPU enclosure to communicate with non Gygabite cards)

For detailed photos, see post here : https://egpu.io/forums/postid/58175/

The only change I did was to take the power from the 8 pin connector instead of the mainboard connector. I chose the Zotac because it was one of the smallest 1660S cards I could find. See attached picture for the pinout, I took power from the main square 12V.

Benchmarks

passmark 3d was 10480, so close to 1660ti mobile, about 20% drop from a desktop 1660S. Running Hogwarts Legacy with the Nvidia experience recommended settings, which are a mix of ultra, high and mid, low TAA at 2560x1080p at pretty much 60fps with a few 1% lows, but it's very playable. Basically the way I see it, the eGPU runs as if it was a mobile card of the same die as the desktop.

Very happy with results so far

@philippe_leboutillier, welcome aboard and thank you for your build.

Toshiba systems are a bit elusive around here. They to pique (my) curiousity as have in some ways had interesting designs or futuristic materials.

You've also done some modding to the AORUS Gaming Box to work with the GTX 1660 Super.

Mind including some more photos and description for your intriguing build to give more of a view as to what you are seeing there?

@nando4

Thanks for you feedback. I put the Aorus box back together, do not want to open it up again, it's fairly flimsy when not screwed together. I did add a link to the original eGPU.io post that I followed to mod the box. It includes pictures of where to put the wire.

Just to clarify, my machine is not a Toshiba, but the newer Chinese made Dynabooks. It's still a very good machine. It has one of the best cooling solutions for an ultrabook, when I did benchmark the machine, the CPU was able to run stable at 28watts for the long 1 hour tests, the machine scored in the top 10% in all scores, top 5 percent for the iGPU and CPU scores compared to other machines of the same specs. There was one comparable MSI machine with similar specs that beat it but that's it. They are hard to get because they are mostly direct sold to entreprises/governments, but from my experience, they are worth it. Got mine second handed, and I simply cannot complain.
